Most people could probably vouch for the late Steve Irwins fame by that recognizable “crikey” motto or his distinctive khaki getup, but now they dont have to.
Widely known as “the Crocodile Hunter,” Irwin will be honored with the 2,635th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the television category on April 26, the Hollywood Chamber Commerce announced Tuesday.
“People from around the world will always remember the animal whisperer Steve Irwin,” said producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies, Ana Martinez. “He was a joy to be around and entertained all with his love and knowledge of the animal kingdom.”
Born in 1962 to eventual founders of the Australia Zoo in Queensland, Irwin was exposed to wild animals early in his life.
He made a name for himself with the success of his documentary television series, “The Crocodile Hunter.” Behind “MythBusters,” its the second longest-running program in history of the Discovery Communications network.
In September 2006, Irwin died after a close encounter with a stingray off the coast of Queensland.
Irwin is the 11th Australian to receive a star and only the second Australian to have a star added to the Walk of Fame since its original construction in 1960 after Kate Blanchett, whose ceremony was back in 2008.
With only one posthumous award given each year, the selection committee undoubtedly picked a real one. As with all Walk of Fame ceremonies, anyone can attend for free. Irwins family will accept the star on his behalf.
