Marvels Spider-Man – still selling

Darksiders III has failed to make it into the top 10 this week, as FIFA 19 returns to the top and Forza and Pokémon prosper.

TokiGame review: Toki is a very unexpected arcade remake

As the annual Christmas rush of new game releases winds down the UK sales chart has begun to close ranks, with not a single new entry in the all formats top 10.

The biggest new release of the week was Darksiders III, which could only manage a debut at number 32 in the all-formats chart. [Update: The individual format chart is now in and Darksiders III didnt even make the top 40.]

Sales of the sequel were down 84% on Darksiders II and 70% on the first game, although the last game was six years ago now, when digital sales were far less of a factor than they are now – which, as has been the case with all sequels this year, makes direct comparisons difficult.

The fans always questioned why such a niche release was coming out just before Christmas though and instead the number has stayed with a much more obvious candidate: FIFA 19.

Sales for most of the games in the top 10 are now starting to fall, with last weeks Battlefield V down 48%. Thats a relatively good second week drop for a major title, but in terms of physical sales at least its still well down on the previous game.

But some sequels have bucked the trend and the massive drops in sales for some titles cannot be put down simply to the rise of digital downloads.

Forza Horizon 4 continues to do extremely well, with sales so far up 18% on those of Forza Horizon 3 in 2016. Although Chart-Track makes it difficult to track the new Pokémon releases, by counting them as two different games, sales are now 8% ahead of X and Y on the 3DS – despite starting out 5% lower.

And then theres Marvels Spider-Man, which is still the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 game ever and if current sales trajectories continue is on course to overtake Uncharted 4 as the best-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive in the UK.

As for this week, it sees the final flurry of new releases before Christmas, including Just Cause 4, PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds on PlayStation 4, and most importantly Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Switch.
