A new trailer for upcoming Pokemon movie Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution has led many to believe its a CGI remake of the first movie.

Released on New Years Day as the clock struck midnight in Japan, the trailer shows a CGI Mewtwo chasing after Mew through the clouds – coupled with the tagline the legend is back.

The first Pokemon movie was released in 1998 in Japan, and centred around Mewtwo capturing and creating clones of other Pokemon after realising he was a clone of Mew.

While the original film was titled Pokemon: The First Movie in the UK, in Japan it was called Pocket Monsters the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back, lending further credence to the remake idea.

Its unclear yet if the upcoming film will be entirely CGI, which appears to be more conventional in design compared to the recent animation in Detective Pikachu.
