Will Smith and Jada Pinkett may not have the most conventional marriage by societys ideals of traditional.
But the couple arent really married after all, according to Jada, 47, who explains why she and Will, 50, refer to each other as life partners rather than husband and wife.
The couple celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary in December 2017 but, two decades since tying the knot, have found new ways to keep their relationship strong.
Jada told People of their choice to banish the married label: I needed a different form to dissolve all the expectations that I had of a marriage. I needed to do that to see Will outside of husband and see him as a human being.
We have all these expectations. Oh, this is what a husband is. This is what a wife is. I started dissolving all the ideas and expectations and labels.

Will first made the revelation that he and Jada use the term life partners in July while appearing on Tidals Rap Radar podcast.
The couple are parents to two children, Jaden, 20, and Willow, 17, while Will is also father to son Trey, 25, from his first marriage to Sheree Zampino.
Will is set to continue the conversation of longevity in marriage when Jadas Red Table Talks returns to Facebook on Monday. The Men In Black actor will discuss his marriage to Jada with the Gotham actress, Willow and his mother-in-law Adrienne Banfield-Jones.

Teasing the episode, Jada said: Will comes on the show for two episodes, and we talk about redefining our relationship, going from calling ourselves married to becoming life partners. I felt like there was a way to speak about that that was open and transparent. But there are still aspects that are private.
A preview from the forthcoming episode featured Will admitting that he kept a diary of Jada crying every morning for 45 days straight during a rough patch in their relationship.
