If you wanted to help fund the creation of Shenmue III then youve missed your chance, as crowdfunding for the keenly awaited sequel has officially closed.
Originally announced during Sonys 2015 E3 conference, Shenmue III has gone on to become one of the most successful gaming projects on Kickstarter with a total of $7,179,510 raised from 81,087 backers.
Almost $1 million of that came after the Kickstarter campaign, but now creator Yu Suzuki has confirmed that hes stopped taking Slacker Backer money as well.
Quite an impressive score, isnt it!?, he said in an email to backers. Seeing the final numbers, all of us here cant help but feel all over again the immensity of the support everyone has given to make this project come true! Thank you!

Shenmue III has been delayed multiple times already but currently has a release date of August 27, 2019 for PlayStation 4 and PC.

Although it sounds like a lot, $7.1 million is a very modest budget by modern video game standards but that total does not include any additional funding that may be provided by outside interests such as Sony and publisher Deep Silver.
And while the total is one of the highest for a video game project on Kickstarter its nowhere close to Star Citizen, which holds the record for crowdfunding at a staggering $200 million.
There does seem to be a direct relationship though, between how much a game earns from backers and how unlikely it seems that it will ever be finished…
