PS4 players received a nice little surprise this week in conjunction with 2K Games big Borderlands blowout.

As if it wasn't enough to reveal plenty more info about the upcoming Borderlands 3 release gearbox have also seen fit to roll out the red carpet to owners of the existing Borderlands Handsome Collection on PS4.

For those unaware, the bundle includes the rip-rollickingly good shooter sequel, Borderlands 2 along with the game that preceded it, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

And this week, PS4 (and Xbox players) were gifted a brand new completely free upgrade to the game in the form of an Ultra HD texture pack that'll spruce up those ageing titles with a bit of 2019 graphical magic.

Want to see how good it looks, take a look at the new trailer above (but remember to pick that jaw up off the floor afterwards).

Increase the visual fidelity of Borderlands 2 and its with this Ultra HD Texture Pack. Upgrade game textures including characters, vehicles, weapons, and environments.

Here's a bit more specifics on the update courtesy of Gearbox and 2K Games:

"The Borderlands Ultra HD Texture Pack increases the visual fidelity of Borderlands: The Handsome Collection and its DLC on consoles, and provides a visual upgrade for Borderlands 2, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and all their DLC.

"Installing the pack will upgrade game textures such as characters, vehicles, weapons, and environments. Players will best appreciate all the added detail at 4K resolution, but improvements can be enjoyed on other displays as well."

"The Ultra HD Texture Pack is free to both new and existing product owners. On PlayStation 4 Pro, the texture pack will appear as downloadable content on the digital product page for Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.

"On PC and Xbox One X, players will have the option to download the texture pack for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2 separately. (Note: the texture pack is not a mandatory update – its optional for all players.)"

More specifically the Ultra HD Texture Pack includes the following upgrades on console:

  • 4K Ultra HD resolution and HDR for Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro players
  • This includes improved ink line definition and framing/outline around character models
  • Improved quality and smoothness of shadows, especially during movement
