Overwatch - the game of the summer?

Overwatch – could it end up on Switch too?

After announcing Diablo III for the Nintendo Switch, Blizzard has admitted that Overwatch might come to Nintendos console as well.

The news that Diablo III is coming to Switch later this year means it will be the first time a Blizzard game has been released on Nintendo hardware since The Lost Vikings on Game Boy Advance in 2003.

Thats not quite the snub it sounds, since Blizzard is primarily a PC developer, but they do have one other obvious console-friendly game that could be a good fit for the Switch: Overwatch.

Not only are fans thinking it though, but so too are Blizzard themselves. With senior producer Pete Stilwell admitting to GameSpot that Overwatch on Switch is feasible.

Anything is within the realm of possibility, he said. Our team was given the task to work on this. If [Overwatch developer] Team 4 picks up that endeavour, thats on them.

Put while that presumably means that Starcraft II is also possible, it sounds like thats already been discounted. Primarily because the game, which has never appeared on consoles before, would have to be changed too much from its original form.

The N64 version of StarCraft was cool but you had to change the game quite a bit to make it work properly on console, said Stilwell. StarCraft II is next level requirements from how much dexterity you need with a mouse and keyboard, so I think that would have been a very difficult port. It would have [to] change the core gameplay.

The N64 version only had an analogue stick to control the game but while the Switch does have a touchscreen its unavailable when playing in docked mode.

With Starcraft (and therefore presumably Warcraft) ruled out there arent a lot of other obvious Blizzard games to bring to the Switch, especially as Hearthstone remains PC and smartphone-only.

The bigger question is whether Blizzard would ever consider making a Switch exclusive but that doesnt seem to be on the cards either.

Although, as Stilwell admits, one of the main reasons for the Diablo III port is to get a better handle on the Switchs hardware. So who knows where that might lead in the future…
