Alex and Emily have been crowned the winners of My Kitchen Rules for 2018.

After months of cooking challenges – along with plenty of shouting matches – the Seven Network revealed on Sunday night that the Queensland couple are the ones to take home $250,000 in prize money.

The pair did not find out they were this year's winners until the show wrapped up just after 9pm. Producers filmed two different endings in order to keep the outcome a secret until the very end.

The episode, which was filmed late last year, saw the final two teams plate up an impressive five-course meal. However, the judges were most wowed by Alex and Emily's lamb brains, pork belly and "penicillin" dessert.

The episode also featured plenty of drama, with Kim and Suong getting into an argument over whether not to redo their dessert and Emily breaking down into tears with just minutes to go before plating up her and Alex's last main course.

Alex and Emily finished the evening with a total of 55 points out of a possible 60. Kim and Suong, on the other hand, finished with a total of 52.

The contest came down to a nail-biting finish, with the judges describing the food as a "knockout" and only pinging Kim and Suong's presentation and creme caramel. Alex and Emily, meanwhile, were criticised for pairing their lobster with cauliflower.

This year an average 1.2 million viewers tuned in to watch each episode of MKR across the capital cities.

While the ninth season is done and dusted, producers will soon start scouring the country for the next batch of amateur cooks to grace the nation's television screens in 2019.
