Just last year, Tom Grennan reckoned he could still pop down to the shops to grab a pint of milk, or hop on the bus to get from A to B.

But life has changed a lot for the 23-year-old singer in the last 12 months.

The artists debut album Lighting Matches shot to number three in the UK album charts over the summer and, following a successful UK tour, he was recently announced as a headline act for Live at Leeds – one of many big gigs expected to come from the newcomer next summer.

While he insists hes just Tom Grennan innit, his rise to music fame with gravelly hits like Found What Ive Been Looking For and Something In The Water mean hes crossed the threshold into glitzy Hollywood events, star-studded parties and a contact list filled with A-list celebs.

Elton John might have casually dropped Tom a phone call to tell him hes a fan earlier this year, but since then, the net of celebrity support has only got wider.

Ive been in some weird situations. Ive had a few few nights out with Liam Gallagher; Noel Gallagher, he patted me on the shoulder and was like, “I love what youre doing,” Tom told Metro.co.uk.

I was in America and had a big conversation with Dave Grohl, who was introduced to my music through someone.

I was also recently at Stella McCartneys party and was introduced to Gwen Stefani, I was chatting to Ringo Starr.

Ive been around a lot of music royalty which inspired me loads.

Tom doesnt let himself get too starstruck, though.

Realising there could be a lot to glean from such encounters, the former footballer says he often uses them as an opportunity to get advice from the big players in the game.

Artists like Pro Green, Example, all these people that Ive met along the way, theyve always said to me, “Just keep going”, he explained.

Theyve always said that when theyve met me, they can see something in me so dont lose that and dont ever think that your creations are not something because they are something.

Naturally, with parties comes fashion and Tom admits hes a man who likes to look good.

For Tom, who uses Amazon Fashion for his sartorial needs, its all about channelling creativity.

Im not there in the mirror trying 12 different outfits on every day but its something I do like doing, he shared.

I like being creative with what I wear and its like music really, its painting pictures.

If you feel like you look good then youre gonna perform better. For me, I feel more creative when Im in different things.

All things considered, youd forgive Tom for letting his modesty slip. But no matter how big he gets – and he expects to get a lot bigger – the musician refuses to let the fame goes to his head.

In Toms words, the only difference he notices in his life is that hes just got a lot busier.

I just think people can see that Im just Tom Grennan innit, Im your mate, Im in the pub having a drink with you after I sing on stage, he added.

Im not letting all this music thing change me because its just what I do, like nurses do what they do and builders do what they do but they dont come out and think they shit from a different hole because they dont and neither do it so Im just keeping it cool.
