It’s a scene we remember all too well as it broke our hearts and made us want to jump into the screen and hug Emma Thompson.
You know the one, when Emma’s character, Karen, sobs to Joni Mitchell after she discovers that her husband – played by the late, great Alan Rickman – had bought jewellery for his assistant, you wanted to slap, as she tempted him to cheat on his wife, AKA legend Emma.
Yeah, that one.
Now, speaking at a fundraiser for the Tricycle Theatre in North West London this evening, the actress revealed her own personal heartbreak helped inspire how she filmed that scene for the 2003 flick we still watch every Christmas.
‘That scene where my character is standing by the bed crying is so well known because it’s something everyone’s been through’, she said. ‘I knew what it was like to find a necklace that wasn’t meant for me.’
Emma was referring to the infidelity in her own marriage when it was believed her then-husband Kenneth Branagh had an affair with fellow actor Helena Bonham Carter.
‘I had my heart very badly broken by Ken. So I knew what it was like to find the necklace that wasn’t meant for me.
‘Well it wasn’t exactly that, but we’ve all been through it.’
And, look at that, now our hearts are broken all over again.
Emma was married to Kenneth after the two fell in love on the set of BBC drama Fortunes Of War in 1987, marrying two years later and they even had a very Branglina moniker at the time, Ken and Em.
It was suggested Kenneth started an affair with Helena when they worked together in 1994, before he and Emma divorced the year later.
His former wife revealed there is no bad blood between her and Helena these days though, after she told The Sunday Times years ago: ‘I’ve had so much bloody practice at crying in a bedroom, then having to go out and be cheerful, gathering up the pieces of my heart and putting them in a drawer.

‘That is… all blood under the bridge. You can’t hold on to anything like that. I just think… pfft.
‘It’s pointless. I haven’t got the energy for it.. Helena and I made our peace years and years ago… she’s a wonderful woman.’
