Brad Pitt revealed he used his divorce from Angelina Jolie in his new film, Ad Astra.

The 55-year-old split from the Changeling actress – with whom he shares six children – back in 2016.

Speaking about the film, in which he plays astronaut Roy McBride, he explained he had to do a lot of soul searching while taking on the role.

And the breakdown of his marriage had a huge part to play in that.

I would be exploring it whether there was a script that allowed that or not, he confessed to NPR.

A breakup of a family is certainly an eye-opener that as one — and Im speaking in general again — but as one needs to understand, I had to understand my own culpability in that, and what can I do better.

The Once Upon A Time In Hollywood star recently explained he was running from himself for a while after their romance ended, using alcohol to numb his pain.

What I realised is that I was running to avoid tough feelings, painful feelings, he told CNN. I just didnt know how to deal with them. Anything I found that I used for escape.

Those kinds of difficult feelings, I dont know how better to describe it. It can be anything, drugs, booze, Netflix, snacks. Anything.

But Brad insisted he no longer wants to be running from anything.

I want to sit in it, I want to feel it, I want to get through the rough night. I found in doing so, you come out the other side with a more profound understanding, of yourself and a greater gratefulness of those in your life, he added.
