The release date of Borderlands 3 is drawing closer, but what exactly do we know about the long-awaited sequel?

What is Borderlands 3?

For those unfamiliar with Borderlands 3, it is an action role-playing first person shooter set five years after the events of Borderlands 2. Developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games, it is the fourth mainstream entry in the franchise, fifth if you include the Tales Of The Borderlands games developed by Telltale Games.

You are a Vault Hunter who initially only cares about finding treasure and not about anyone that gets in your way. On your adventure, you will meet an array of interesting characters ranging from the ludicrously insane to the marginally disturbed; but these people are what truly make the title shine. Borderlands hasnt changed that much over the years, but what it aims to do, it nails.

Play alone or with up to three others and choose a class out of the four available: a soldier, siren, gunner, and hunter – each of which has a set of three unique action skills. You then take on various missions from non-playable characters and bounty boards to gain experience, money and equipment.

Loot is a driving force within Borderlands 3; everything you earn from completing missions can be obtained from killing enemies during your playthrough. Once you have accumulated enough experience, you will level up and receive skill points which you can distribute between three different skill trees.

Borderlands 3 reviews – what do they say?

From the demo we played recently we found the gunplay has been tweaked and is a little more defined than the originals; the weapons have a better sense of weight, which leads to some very satisfying headshots. On the other hand, it doesnt have any drastic changes from the previous titles and plays and looks too similar to the newly remastered versions of the originals.

We have been unable to publish a review for Borderlands 3 before launch due to preview copies not being available in the UK, but the early ones from the U.S. are mostly positive, with praise going towards the gunplay and the greater variety of open world environments. Some of them have been quite negative though, complaining about the lack of innovation and the game seeming old-fashioned compared to other recent loot shooters.
