Alexandra Burke has celebrated International Women’s Day by asking all women to ‘encourage each other’.
‘I have a thing about people saying “it’s a mans world”, I believe it’s everyone’s world,’ said the former X Factor winner.
‘There’s enough space for men and women to do what they want in this world.’
Speaking at a special event hosted by Girls I Rate, a not-for-profit organisation made up of notable women within the creative industries who share artistic and social ideologies, Alexandra, 29, also spoke about the importance of women being honest and taking care of their mental health.
‘I’m about to turn 30, in August, and I’m loving that I’m finally becoming comfortable in being honest,’ she said.
‘Not to do the whole thing in the industry when someone asked you if you’re alright, [to say] “everything’s wonderful”, if you’re not feeling alright don’t be afraid to speak up. Being vulnerable is a strength.’
The gala, held at 100 Wardour Street, aimed to celebrate women on International Women’s Day and in the centenary year of women being allowed to vote; guests enjoyed a cocktail reception and three-course meal, as well as a DJ set by BBC 1xtra’s Melody Kane.
