Every week Microsoft reward their players with some kind of freebie because they just want to be loved. This is on top of services like Game Pass, which basically let you play a small amount each month to have access to nearly every game that comes out.
They're doing good things for their consumers, and it's probably going to pay off when it comes to the next generation of consoles with Xbox Scarlett.
Well, this week, the freebie is the chance to try out an excellent game for free, one that started off life as a free game on PlayStation 4 back in 2015. Irony much.
It also happens to be probably one of the best multiplayer games around.
I am, of course, talking about Rocket League.
That's right, up until July 15th 11:59 pm PDT, Rocket League is free to play as part of the Xbox Free Play days Scheme.
That means you've got a whole weekend to delve into this frantic game. This is a game that bravely asks, what if football but cars? Well, rocket-powered cars that can defy gravity and a giant football the size of a couple of them that explodes whenever a goal is scored.
It's the sort of game that sounds like it was conceived by two drunk blokes and a master plan scribbled onto a bar napkin whilst eating some pork scratchings.
The free game days announcement was made over on Xbox Wire via this post, and it seems as though it might be trying to get you to buy it as the game is also currently half price.
We're fairly certain that's the end result Xbox are going for anyway.
In case you've never heard of Rocket League, here's the rundown straight from the futuristic horse's mouth:
"Rocket League combines soccer with driving in an unbelievable physics-based multiplayer-focused sequel to Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars! Choose from a variety of high-flying vehicles equipped with huge rocket boosters to score amazing aerial goals and pull off incredible, game-changing saves!"
If you've not heard of Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, then you're not alone in that, so don't worry too much.
Rocket League has a bunch of different game modes, where you play in matches of between 1 and 4 players as they all try and win the match.
In fact, don't trust us, here's the developers at Psyonix explaining all the good stuff that can be found by playing. It's like the white bit in the middle of an Oreo. The good bit.
Hit the Rocket League pitch by yourself in 1v1 Duels, or invite friends and play 2v2, 3v3, or the chaotic 4v4 mode. Theres also Hoops Mode for basketball fans, Snow Day that combines Rocket League and hockey, and the zany Drop Shot and Rumble modes. All playlists can be played against online opponents or locally for couch co-op fun.
Also live right now is the totally tubular 80s-themed in-game event, Radical Summer. Earn Cassettes from playing Online Matches, which can be redeemed for unique in-game items inspired by 80s pop culture. Jump into Casual, Competitive, or Extra modes to earn Cassettes, or try out the new limited-time mode, Spike Rush.
Players will also earn items from Rocket Pass 3, Rocket Leagues timed progression system. Earn XP from Online Matches and by completing Weekly Challenges to earn in-game items that can only be found in this Rocket Pass. Progress through Rocket Pass for free or upgrade to Rocket Pass Premium to expand your item collection even further.
It's a genuinely great game, and having the chance to try it out for free is a nice chance to see if it's for you. plus, your progress from this weekend will transfer over if you buy the game itself, and if you've got Game Pass then you can just play it there.
