Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse (PS4) - George and Nico return

Broken Sword – more than 20 years of pointing and clicking

A reader explains why he enjoys graphic adventure series Broken Sword and looks forward to the hinted at sixth game in the franchise.

Very few point n click games have ever been mainstream successes, however there is one that has won the hearts and admiration of many gamers and has shown how a decent storyline, hand-animated characters, and impressive backgrounds can win over the mass market. The very first Broken Sword demonstrated how a well-crafted game can become the stepping stone to creating a long-running and critically acclaimed series.

The very first game launched on the PC and PlayStation, and managed to impress enough gamers that this would ensure demand for more games from developer Revolution. The first game introduces you to George Stobbartt, an American tourist who is on vacation in France. However, as events transpire George finds himself having to explore Paris and solve various puzzles with the ability to engage in conversation with characters he meets. The first game has its share of fun and interesting dialogue and is still being replayed by fans today.

The long-awaited sequel to Broken Sword hit the PC and PlayStation and offered vast improvements. As well as being longer and having an all-new story ut introduced the player to new locations, characters, conversations, and puzzles. For the time these games were released they were very impressive on a PlayStation console, with its hardware limitations. It also actually appeared on the Official PlayStation Magazine demo disc as a playable demo, which I would often find myself playing over and over until its actual release. The full game did allow us to play as Nico for the first time, allowing the player to play from Nicos perspective and to allow you to understand Nico better.

Revolution then announced that a third game would hit the next generation formats. With upgraded visuals, sound, and brand new content the third game was more enjoyable, as well as offering a newer point n click menu. With its upgraded 3D graphics and improved puzzles and character animations this made the third game even more enjoyable. We also got to meet some strange characters like Colonel Butterly and Eamon Omara.

A fourth game hit the PC but sadly did not come to the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. The fourth game did offer a surprising development, which showed George with a different person and ensured this would cause fans to ask where Nico was.

To fans surprise a fifth game came to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as PC. This offered next gen graphics and visuals, and because of the long wait it was refreshing to see another new game in this series. Considering this game was funded via Kickstarter it didnt do too bad raising the funds needed and was finally released and received fair reviews.
