E3 2019 exterior

Not everyone put on their best effort

A reader is upset at the lack of effort some companies showed at E3 last week and insists they make a better effort next year.

For anyone thats into their games the beginning of June is always the most exciting time of the year. Thats when E3 (and all its leaks) happen and we get to see not only all the new games for the next year or so but also all the publishers and console makers puffing out their chests and trying to show themselves off at their absolute best. Except this year that never happened.

Nintendo did very well, by doing their usual thing but improving on last year by having a lot more games. Square Enix also made the most of their event with two of the most interesting games of the show and more than enough titles to justify their own conference. Bethesda were also surprisingly good and managed a good bounce back from their Fallout 76 related disasters, even if most of their new announcements were just CGI trailers (a sadly common occurrence for many companies this year).

And that, pretty much, was the highlights. Sony and Activision werent there at all, which made no sense as they both had important games to show off and there was no reason to just take your toys and go home rather than just have a slightly lower key presence than usual. I still dont really understand whether EA were there or not [they had a separate event in a different area of town but werent at E3 itself – GC] but their livestreams were all awful with some of the worst hosts Ive ever had to endure.

The Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order guy made me want to fly to LA and punch his stupid face in he was so annoying. Which was all the worse because what they showed off was seemingly nothing like the final game. If it wasnt for GCs preview I would have had no idea it was a Metroidvania with Dark Souls influences, and just assumed it was a bland, linear action platformer. Just a terrible reveal event.

And then there was Microsoft who were kind of okay… ish. With an open goal in front of them they could have gone to town but all they did was meekly tap the ball in with all the flair of an exhausted toddler. What we learnt about Xbox from E3 was that theyre making a new console (shocker, you already said that last year!) and that youre so embarrassed of Gears 5 that you had to make a pre-rendered trailer to pretend its interesting and add a cheesy Terminator promotion on top.

That was almost it, unless you consider Phantasy Star Online 2 and a boring Halo Infinite trailer news. Nothing on Fable IV, nothing on any other new first party games, and no indication of what the new console wold do that would be actually different. It was the perfect time for Google to take advantage of Microsoft fumbling the ball, but apparently they only had a small off-site event and didnt bother turning up properly either.

And then finally theres Ubisoft, who managed to leak everything out beforehand, as usual, with the only secret they managed to keep to themselves being a terrible-looking mobile game with Sam Fisher in it. Urgh. Between the generic-looking Rainbow Six-in-space game and the laughably bad dialogue of Ghost Recon: Breakpoint (seriously, it sounds like it was written by a 12-year-old) it was oRead More – Source
