An alleged thief reportedly used a stolen car to become a Lyft driver, driving 11,000 miles before the vehicle was returned to its owners.
According to SFGate, “Cierra and Josh Barton purchased a new Honda HR-V at the beginning of summer. It was stolen while parked in front of their Livermore apartment complex at the end of August. Four months later, Hayward police called the Bartons to say they had recovered the vehicle.”
When the vehicle was recovered, having been abandoned on the side of a road for two weeks, stickers for the ride-sharing app Lyft were found on the windows, and the odometer had risen by 11,000 miles.
“What condition will it be in? Burned out? Gutted? I was imaging the worst when we went to pick it up,” expressed Cierra Barton, one of the car’s owners. “It wasn’t burned out, it wasn’t gutted, but it appeared to be have been used as a Lyft… Not only did someone steal our car, they made money off it.”
In a statement, a spokesman for Lyft claimed the company had not been able to match the vehicle to any Lyft accounts.
“The safety of the Lyft community is our top priority and we take these allegations seriously,” the spokesman declared. “Given the information provided, we are unable to match this vehicle to any Lyft accounts in the area. We have reached out to Ms. Barton and we stand ready to assist law enforcement in any investigation.”
