Robert Pattinson has no idea how he even got the role as the next Batman.

A new actor comes through to play Batman every few years, but when it was announced this version would be played by Robert, we all did a double take.

The Good Time actor graced the cover of Esquire with The Lighthouse co-star Willem Dafoe and if the cover – black and white, to emulate the movie – doesnt scream luxury cologne ad, we dont know what does.

Speaking to Esquire, the 33-year-old said: Its kind of insane. I was so far away from ever thinking it was a realistic prospect. I literally do not understand how Ive got it, at all.

Youve got to give yourself some credit here, Rob.

From Twilight to The Batman? Thats what we call growth.

His new role wont come without a lot of sceptical super fans, but what can you do when youve been acting for a while?

As we all saw with his awkward Twilight interviews, Robert found it hard to adjust to fame.

He said: For a long time youre very self-conscious in the street. Youre hiding a lot, so [on set] you have an excuse to be wild.

Its like being an adrenaline junkie. And also, when you dont know how to do something, why not just run headfirst into a wall?

See what happens. I havent got any other ideas.

The Batman has not started filming yet, and isnt expected to begin until early 2020.

However, Robert has already donned the iconic Batsuit while screen-testing, and it sounds as cool as wed expect.

The Remember Me star told Variety: You do feel very powerful immediately. And its pretty astonishing, something that is incredibly difficult to get into, so the ritual of getting into it is pretty humiliating.

Youve got five people trying to shove you into something. Once youve got it on, its like, “Yeah, I feel strong, I feel tough, even though I had to have someone squeezing my butt cheeks into the legs”.

The November – December issue of Esquire UK is on sale from 3 October.
