Red Dead Redemption 2 EARLY ACCESS: Release time news for Rockstar's Xbox One and PS4 game (Pic: ROCKSTAR)

The most anticipated game of the year is due to release this week, but ahead of the launch of Rockstar's GTA5 follow-up, some retailers at home and in the US are offering to let gamers get the title early.

Don't worry though – this isn't some massive street-breaking event that's going to undermine the integrity of Red Dead Redemption 2's launch, rather, it's an opportunity for players to get a jump on the game and it's huge install size.

In the US, stores such as Target and Gamestop will let gamers visit their stores and grab the games they've pre-ordered on Thursday evening, meaning they can get home and get on the install of the title as soon as possible.

UK Retailer GAME has confirmed that select stores will be hosting midnight openings for Red Dead Redemption 2.

Many of these will be starting the prepurchase process at 10:30pm on Thursday, October 25, followed by the midnight pick up time.

Rockstar is allowing this – and the stores are allowing early sale of the games – because they'll take a while to install on modern consoles.

According to Rockstar, players of RDR2 will need to find 107GB on Xbox One and 99GB of room on PS4.

On top of this, Rockstar has confirmed there'll be a day one patch to install, too. You can skip this patch (and it's likely to be quite meaty) but there's a warning that comes with that:

“As is common for a game of this size and scope, there will be a downloadable title update addressing a number of last-minute tweaks, bugs and fixes,” a statement from Rockstar explains.

“To ensure the best possible gameplay experience, we strongly recommend making sure youve downloaded this update before launching the game.”

Anyone that does manage to pick up the game early might want to be aware of the warning Rockstar has issued to anyone wanting to stream the game.

“We know that many players around the world are planning on jumping right on Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, Mixer and other platforms to stream and upload their game experience for friends and fans,” Rockstar adds.

“We also know that games frequently fall off the truck and wind up in players hands early, so wed like you to know when it is okay to be able to broadcast or upload game content."

As such, Rockstar issued these timings and streaming guidelines to players:

  • Australia / New Zealand: 12:01am Friday, October 26
  • Eastern Time: 7:01am Thursday, October 25
  • Pacific Time: 4:01am Thursday, October 25
  • British Time: 12:01pm Thursday, October 25
