PlayStation VR 2: Good news for Sony PlayStation 5 as leaked patent hints a wireless PSVR (Pic: SONY)
Google may be moving into the gaming sphere with its newly-announced Stadia service, and Microsoft may be ready to battle against the tech giant with its own mysterious xCloud platform, but Sony is potentially going in the other direction.
The PlayStation owner may well double down on hardware – perhaps being the only tech company in the future that doesn't rely too heavily on streaming, instead opting for more traditional disc-based hardware.
If what we've seen of Sony's plans so far are anything to go by, that could mean we'd also see more of the PlayStation VR – with Sony doubling down on living room based VR solutions as more companies move away from physical boxes and peripherals.
To that end, this week's rumours about a wireless VR headset seem interesting.
A newly discovered patent suggests that Sony is working on a wireless VR headset for the next-generation PlayStation VR (via VentureBeat).

The headset patent shows that Sony is looking at wireless solutions to headsets that would still be 'tethered' to a PlayStation 4 (or differently-named PlayStation console).
The Sony patent seems to describe wireless tech that primarily needs to use 60GHz signals to a dedicated tether, but also makes use of a backup signal running at 5GHz via WiFi to ensure there's a stable connection at all times – so your VR connection doesn't drop out and make you nauseous or uncomfortable.
This means that even if you're out of range of the tether, you'll still maintain a small connection and stay somewhat synced to the PlayStation console. It's not as elegant as the Oculus Quest's all-in-one headset, but if Sony opted for that, they'd lose the processing power of the PS4 (or potentially PS5) – this seems like a decent compromise.
It's an interesting solution and one that means Sony is clearly thinking about more accessible tech in the future – a headset that needs fewer cables and less space to operate (and that will likely come with better visual fidelity than this gen's PSVR kit) is surely likely to win fans in the more casual gamer space.
This isn't the first we've heard of PSVR 2, either – Shawn Layden alluded to it in an interview about the future of PlayStation earlier this year.
According to recent comments from Sony's Shawn Layden, it looks like we could be closer than ever to a massive new update to the virtual reality setup.
Layden, during his keynote speech at this years DICE conference, talked about the future of various Sony products… but one that caught our attention, in particular, was a reference toRead More – Source
