FIFAs sporting rival has had an underwhelming debut in the UK top 10, but Yakuza Kiwami 2 has proven another hit for Sega.
PES 2019 review – a game of two halves
Its a long, long time since Pro Evolution Soccer has been any kind of serious rival to FIFA, and it certainly doesnt look like this is going to be year that it starts clawing back lost ground.
Despite generally positive reviews PES 2019 sold 42% less in its first week compared to PES 2018, no doubt in part because the series has now lost the use of the Champions League licence to FIFA.
The PlayStation 4 version of PES 2019 topped the individual formats chart, but the game couldnt even beat last weeks F1 2018 in the all formats top 10 – although it only missed the mark by a paltry 250 copies.
There was better news for Sega a little lower down the chart though, with Yakuza Kiwami 2, a remake of PlayStation 2 game Yakuza 2, getting as high as number three in the individual format chart and continuing the series string of strong Western performances during the PlayStation 4 era.

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate on Nintendo Switch also did well for what is essentially a 3DS port, and also shows a veteran Japanese franchise belatedly finding an audience in the West – in this case thanks to the success of Monster Hunter: World earlier in the year.
Rebellions Strange Brigade had less to celebrate though as the game debuted at number 16 in the all formats chart and peaked at number 25 with the PlayStation 4 version in the individual formats chart. Although it is a game thats likely to do better digitally than at retail.
It was actually a very busy week for new releases, even if none of them were blockbusters, with Sony PlayStation VR title Firewall Zero Hour hitting number 10 in the individual format chart and number 11 in the all formats.
Finally, Bandai Namcos excellent Divinity: Original Sin II Definitive Edition came in at number 23 in the all formats top 40 and number 28 in the individual formats for the PlayStation 4 version.

Also notable in terms of last weeks releases is Shenmue I & II, which saw sales plummet a colossal 83% in its second week and almost saw the remaster fall out of both top 40s.
This week is also set to be a busy one at retail, with the launch of key PlayStation 4 exclusive Spider-Man. Despite only being on one format its likely to beat Destiny 2: Forsaken in the charts, which do not measure digital sales. Although with two major releases out the same week its unclear where thatll leave the more niche Dragon Quest XI.
