NBA 2K20 Release Date LEAK: Next PS4, Xbox One basketball game cover star also revealed (Pic: 2K)

While we've come to expect annual sports titles, it's been very quiet on the basketball side of things recently. NBA's Live franchise has sunk back into the shadows, and 2K's juggernaut franchise has been under wraps.

Thankfully, it looks like that silence has now been broken – albeit not by the developers themselves.

Courtesy of @legionhoops on Twitter, it looks like someone managed to grab a cheeky snap of some promotional material for the new title confirming not just the name but the release date too – hoops fans can get their season underway on 6th September.

Also, for those interested, that's Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat should be the games next cover star for the Legend Edition of the game.

Nintendo fans also look to have some good news. While many ports on the diminutive system tend to release after the more powerful console versions, the aforementioned materials seem to suggest a simultaneous release on Switch.

NBA 2K was actually shown as part of the Switch's initial reveal back in December 2016, and the Switch has traditionally been an excellent way to dunk on the go.

2K's other big title, Borderlands 3 also lands in September (13th), making it a huge month for the publisher.

THE WNBA

In a since-deleted tweeted, Renee Montgomery of WNBA side Atlanta Dream tweeted the following:

"So cool to be scanned for the @NBA2K game. Send me a photo if you ever use my player."

The photo showed the player in a scanning booth, so it seems safe to say the time has come for more diversity in 2K's flagship sports title.

This is huge for representation, and we can only hope that the entire roster of the WNBA will be featured.

It's also worth noting that NBA 2K's rival, EA's NBA Live franchises, has featured the WNBA for the last two years – arguably the only thing it can offer in comparison to 2K.

It'll be interesting to see if the WNBA will be incorporated into the 2K series myriad of modes, such as MyCareer and Franchise Mode.

NBA 2K20 New Features

Except for the WNBA, new features for NBA 2K20 is somewhat of an unknown quantity at this point in time; since it hasn't even been announced yet – so speculating about new features is guesswork at best.

Looking back on 2K19, key features were the aforementioned new storyline for career mode as well as refinements to gameplay within the mode such as "Takeover" – boosting attributes for players on a hot streak.
