Though shes probably best known for her role playing alongside Christopher Reeve in the “Superman” franchise in the 1970s and 1980s, Kidder also appeared on the big screen in movies like “Amityville Horror,” “Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx” and “The Great Waldo Pepper.”
But without a doubt, landing the role as a reporter in the “Superman” movie in 1978 launched her into celebrity status.
“Id never read comics, so I didnt know much about Superman,” Kidder shared in a 2009 interview. “But I read this very funny script, and I went in and did a couple scenes, and next thing I knew, I was being flown to England to screen-test, and that was that.”
The actress was also a strong advocate for mental illness after sharing that she suffered from bipolar disorder following a very public mental breakdown in the 1990s.
She is survived by her daughter Maggie McGuane. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
