Kratos big comeback wasnt originally going to be based on Norse mythology, as director Cory Barlog shows off what could have been.

This years triumphant new God Of War game was never going to be set in Ancient Greece like the previous entries, but the Nordic setting was not part of the original plan.

Director Cory Barlog has spoken a few times now of how it was originally going to be based on Egyptian mythology – which makes a little more sense in that Greece is much closer to Egypt and the two cultures have a long history of interaction.

The Egyptian setting was part of the design for some time, but the development team were apparently divided on the idea and it took Barlog himself to break the impasse and decide on a Scandinavia.

He also mentioned some playtesters resistance to the idea of Kratos having a son and being a more sympathetic character, although thankfully it doesnt seem like Barlog listened much to that.

Its probably just as well the game did go with the Nordic setting, as it wouldve ended up coming out only a few months after Assassins Creed Origins. Which funnily enough is switching to Ancient Greek this year, with the upcoming Assassins Creed Odyssey.

The ending of God Of War implies that the Norse setting will remain for at least one more game, but its entirely possible the series could move onto Egypt at some point later.
