What did you think of the PlayStation Meeting?

When exactly will Sonys next console be out?

A Japanese analyst has predicted a late 2019 release for the PS5 but admits it may be delayed because of trouble with components.

The question of when Sony might release the PlayStation 5 is one of the most difficult predictions to make in gaming at the moment, beaten only by trying to work out what Microsofts plans are for an Xbox One successor.

At one point analysts were suggesting the PlayStation 4s follow-up might even be released this year, but that obviously hasnt happened. But almost everyone now agrees it will be 2019 or 2020.

Japanese firm Ace Economic Research Institute suggests that the current plan is the end of 2019, but that its dependent on whether Sony can get hold of enough monolithic ceramic capacitors (MLCC) to go around.

According to a translation of the institutes report by website DualShockers, MLCCs are being used in so many devices at the moment – particularly 5G smartphones and cars – that manufacturers cant keep up with demand.

The institute also predicts that the PlayStation division will make 250 billion yen (£1.77 billion) in profit for its full year results, higher than Sonys own estimates.

But the analysts also think Nintendo is underestimating the Switch and predict that sales could reach 25 million consoles for the fiscal year ending next March.

Nintendo is aiming for only 20 million consoles sold, and some analysts (including the infamous Michael Pachter) dont think theyll make it.

But the Ace Economic Research Institute predicts Nintendo will end up making profits of 330 billion yen (£2.34 billion) – more than Sonys games division.

If Nintendo really can sell 25 million Switch consoles this year that would mean the Switch will be at almost 43 million sales by the end of March, which is more than the current lifetime total of the Xbox One.
