Too much talking

So Eurogamer has also come out in favour of the Metroid Prime 4 rumours saying that Bandai Namco are making the game, or rather a new team that’s made up of ex-LucasArts people. So that seems like it’s a definite (they didn’t seem to know anything about the Ridge Racer 8 side of the rumour though).

Since I don’t think the team have actually dong anything before I don’t think there’s much we can say about that, other than it implies Nintendo realises they need a Western influenced team to work on the game and the approach of Other M was completely the wrong direction to go in.

Obvious the gameplay’s going to be different anyway in Prime, because it’s first person, but I just hope they can get the story wright in the game. If they’re ex-LucasArts they probably have quite a bit of experience, but Metroid games are always best when there’s next to no atmosphere or other characters. It’s all about atmosphere and isolation, which Samus Returns got right but I worry about the new game.

Metroid isn’t Star Wars, which they seemed to be trying to turn the third Prime into, it’s Alien. I mean the main bad guy is called Ridley, as if there wasn’t clue enough!

Battlefield experience

With Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds doing so well, I wonder how long it’ll be till EA, Activision, and the rest start to make their own clones? Fortnite was really quick of the mark – I think some people forget it the Battle Royale mode is a spin-off – but I’m surprise the traditional publishers are being so slow.

Although GC mentioning the lack of Minecraft clones the other day made me realise that sometimes they just seem to ignore the obvious and carry on as they are. I guess you could argue that Minecraft is a difficult kind of game to copy (ignoring the fact that indie devs seem to manage find) but Battle Royale should be child’s play for someone like DICE.

So why isn’t there a Battlefield mode that’s the same thing? Battlefront tends to have less players, because of the good graphics, but if this year’s Battlefield doesn’t have Battle Royale as a main mode I will be kind of shocked.

Bows are cool

I’ve thought for a long while that a Green Arrow game based on the show would be good fun. It could have shades of Batman: Arkham City in its open world, but where you actually get to save people from random crimes rather than having some convenient excuse for the city having been evacuated.

There could be flashback sections to the island where Ollie trained too, to mirror the show’s structure, (although there’s a danger of them seeming a little too similar to the Tomb Raider reboot) and plenty of scope for cameos based on how large the Arrowverse has become, with The Flash, The Atom, Constantine, or Vixen turning up.

It actually seems like exactly the sort of thing that would have had a low-budget tie-in in the PlayStation 2 era, the era that brought us Alias, The Shield, and 24 games.

Basically, I just want more games with bows and arrows in them.

Warmastered, what is it good for?

I’ve recently started playing Darksiders, that I got a while back with Games with Gold. Also got Darksiders II this way, and I’m finding it too be very good. I like the mix of hack ‘n’ slash with a few puzzles thrown in, the puzzles are simple but still enjoyable.

The boss fights are challenging at first until you get to grips with it, I’ve just defeated Tiamut, I think thats its name, after a long battle. It still looks good graphically (maybe this is down to the Xbox One X), does the Warmastered version on the Xbox One add anything else other than improved visuals?
PS: I noticed readers mention couple of times recently that they would like a Metal Gear Solid remake, hasn’t this already been done with Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes on the GameCube? Maybe they should give it the HD treatment like Resident Evil had and put it on Xbox Live and PSN nd Switch, surely this would make sense for Konami.

GC: They can’t because it was a co-production with Nintendo, plus many fans don’t like the changes made in that version. We’ve not played Darkstalkers Warmastered.

Baltar is not the only one longing for a Vanquish sequel. For me it is the best Platinum game, and that is saying something. The sense of empowerment the game exudes is second to none. It was my game of the last generation. So I think asking for sequel is justified in this instance.

I am yet to jump ship form the Wii U to the Switch but Vanquish 2 would certainly be my tipping point.

Burn the heretic

Someone wrote in wondering if anyone hates Zelda: Breath Of The Wild.

My dislike for the game borders on hate.

I wanted to like it, I really did, but by the time I got to Kakariko village and watched a few Let’s Plays I disliked the game a lot.

I hate the way weapons degrade, I hate having to go to the menu to select a new weapon in the middle of a fight.

I hate the fact that the shield parry mechanic is so difficult to get the hang of, especially when it’s so essential to defeat the more difficult enemies.

From what I’ve played and seen on YouTube it seems like the game is out to punish the player at every chance. The difficulty does not seem as fair as Dark Souls was, for example there is a tricky stealth section which can’t be avoided and the game makes it so that you can’t save your progress halfway through, so if you are spotted you have to start over from the beginning.

So yes, I hate Zelda: Breath Of The Wild I feel I gave it a fair go but it’s just not for me.

The high cost of money

A reader wrote in talking about his son’s spending habits on Roblox. I’m afraid it’s much worse than he thought. My son gets 1,000 Robux for his pay each week, which cost me £7.50 on PC. The same amount was £9.99 on iPad.

But this may have changed so 15,000 is £112 if bought on PC, not £70, and you only get a 1,000 if you’re in the builders club, which costs a fiver a month. Otherwise it’s 800 per £7.50.

I was listening to a podcast on the Idle Thumbs network the other day and they drew my attention to this twitter conversation from last September. Game designer Jennifer Scheurle asked other developers to reveal any hidden design mechanics they had used to improve the flow and feel of their games that players would be unaware of. It drew a lot of interesting replies with developers from many high profile games getting involved.

A common one that popped up was that the last few points on your health bar, or the last few rounds of ammo, can be worth double or even quadruple their normal strength. This gives you a better chance of staying alive when you are in tight situation and rewards you with a ‘just made it’ feeling if you do survive.

It’s also apparently common in platform games that at the end of a platform, there are actually a few extra invisible frames to make sure that a last second jump is pulled off rather than you falling to your death.

In Half-Life 1, if there was a group of enemies only a maximum of two would attack the player. The others would shout things like ‘flanking’ to give the impression of clever artificial intelligence but would actually just run off to random locations.

Probably my favourite though regards Alien Isolation. Apparently the alien has two brains. One of them knows your position at all times while the other controls the alien’s movement. The second one bases its movements on hints it is fed by the first one.

There are of course a few people in the thread complaining that developers are deceiving players, failing to recognise that these decisions are made solely to make the game feel as satisfying and fun as possible. It’s a fascinating read that I would recommend scrolling through – and you don’t get to say that very often about Twitter!
