Games Inbox: Is Fortnite better than PUBG?
Fortnite – is it better than PUBG?

The evening Inbox wonders what Rocksteady Games are working on next, as one reader thinks Ni No Kuni II should change its name.

Raw gameplay

As an Xbox One owner I’ve been playing a lot of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds lately, and like most everyone else I’ve spoken to I think it’s great. Technically it’s a bit of a mess but there is nothing like getting a few well-deserved kills in, and feeling like an absolute badass. Especially because you don’t even have to win, or come particularly close, to feel you did well.

On the hand Fortnite is a lot, lot slicker. It feel like a game that’s actually finished and has been made by people who know what they’re doing. I don’t rightly know the background of ‘PlayerUnknown’ but I’m assuming he’s a modder and not a professional game maker.

Nothing wrong with that, Counter-Strike and Dota were both made that way, but Fortnite just seems a lot more reliable and polished. I’m always expecting PUBG to just fall over any second, because it often does. And yet it’s PUBG I come back to the most, just because it’s got that raw feeling that means the shonky graphics actually kind of fit the gameplay.

I don’t know what’s the better game but I do know which one I enjoy most, but what do other readers think?

Working behind the scenes

Noticed the other day that Rocksteady are tweeting about working on a motion capture studio. No clue as to what the game is, but sounds like they might be getting ready to show something off. It’s less than three years since Arkham Knight but it seems much longer than that to me, like they haven’t really made a proper current gen game yet.

I don’t much care whether it’s a Batman game or not, but seeing as they’re owned by Warner Bros. I guess there’s a good chance it will be that or some other kind of DC thing.

They seemed to be hinting they were making a multiplayer game before, which I can see them wanting to do as a difference from the last few games (plus more loot boxes for WB!). I just hope whatever they’re doing it happens so. I think they’re a really underrated developer that would be seen as one of the best in the business if they only put out more games.

They never learn

Unreal how well GTA V is still doing. I’d ask if there’s ever been anything like it, but I already know there hasn’t been. It seems all the stranger to me because I’d had enough of GTA Online within a few days, but I can see how it must be cyber heaven to teenage boys in particular.

I didn’t make the connection before, but I suppose it must be where the new obsession with games as a service came from. Even though, as far as I could see, GTA Online wasn’t too in the face with microtransactions and doesn’t have loot boxes.

It is amazing how little other companies ever seem to learn from GTA. All these years later and it’s only ever the surface features they try to copy. Never understanding that it’s the open world and the freedom, not just the gangsta setting. And they’ve never got that the fact GTA only comes out every five years or so makes it special. Although it sounds like it’ll be even more than that now!

Low priority

Following on from the letter the other day regarding the PlayStation 5, and some comments in the Underbox regarding VR, I really don’t think Sony will be prioritising VR when designing the PlayStation 5, for the simple reason that the percentage of PlayStation VR owners compared with PlayStation 4 owners is as low as 3%.

These are not numbers that would make Sony think VR is necessary for PlayStation 5. I personally think they will play it safe and design a powerful machine that can do 60fps for every game. Have two or three high end exclusives (The Last Of Us Part II?) ready at launch.

It worked this generation, so why change a winning formula. I don’t think we will see anything this year as I believe it won’t release until 2020.

PS: Currently playing Hitman, GT Sport, and Astebreed. Picked up Lumo in the latest PSN sale for just under 4 quid and am looking forward to playing it next.

By any other word

Glad Ni No Kuni II is looking good. I loved the first one, so was super interested in this. Funny your preview should come just after that guy was poking fun at all the other Japanese role-players with weird names. I guess the publishers must think it makes them seem authentic? Or exotic? They keep doing it so it’s either laziness or they genuinely think it’s appealing. But I really don’t see some casual gaming parent coming across something called Ni No Kuni II and thinking that’d be great to play with their kids.

I can imagine maybe Japanese creators insist on it because they don’t like to think of changing their work to suit Western audiences, but really try and pick your battles! A name needs to be catchy, not make you immediately assume the game isn’t for you.

Game of the book

Has anyone played, or even heard of, the PC game based on The Pillars of The Earth by Ken Follett?

I really enjoyed the novel even though I didn’t expect to and wouldn’t have even considered reading if it hadn’t been given to me.

My first thought was that it’s probably rubbish, but it does sound sort of interesting – apparently it’s a point and click adventure where your decisions can alter the events of the original story.

If anyone’s played it can you give me your verdict on it?

Hate is a strong word

I’m curious, has anyone ever written in to say they hate Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. It seems to be the game of the year as far as so many people are concerned but I’m kind of surprised that the anti-Nintendo crowd haven’t tried to review bomb it or something.

I haven’t got a Switch and have no real intentions of getting one, so I don’t know myself but I would’ve said it‘s a surprising game to get such universal approval.

GC: We’ve had plenty of people write in and say they didn’t like it or thought it was overrated. We don’t think anyone actually said they hated it, but that is a pretty extreme reaction to any game.

Worldwide issue

I was reading in the news a couple of days ago about a young man in China that had become paralysed after playing a game for 20 hours without taking a single break. He was said to be pleading with his friends to finish his game for him as they took him out with no feeling in his legs. I read that Internet addiction was declared a clinical disorder there as far back as 2008, and that there had been many gaming associated deaths so this story wasn’t a one-off.

I know different games sell better in different territories but what exactly are they playing that makes them so addicted there? It didn’t say in the article I read. I like a good gaming session but common sense prevails and my food and rest breaks always get the better of me. These kind of stories always seem to pop up about places in Asia, although it could be happening elsewhere I guess I just haven’t read into it thoroughly enough yet.

I can see why all the warnings about epilepsy and taking regular breaks are put on us now when you hear things like this in the news. Pretty crazy stuff in my eyes. I’m sure they have a pause button on their controllers just as we do.

GC: We don’t know what the specific story was, but the games usually turn out to be MMOs. A lot of the problems seem to centre around the culture of Internet cafes, which is very different in Asia compared to the West, but we wouldn’t really like to generalise anything, as video game addiction is a problem all around the world.

I was clearly referencing She-Ra in my letter about Solo character Qi’ra! You know, He-Man’s twin sister? Is there nobody who works at GC who remembers that? Come on, guys! Don’t make me feel older than I already feel! Next you’ll be telling me that you don’t know that they did a Dungeons & Dragons cartoon!
DMR

GC: Oh, okay. We assumed it was probably pronounced as just Kira. But we guess it could be Chi-ra.

I’m a little late to the party but PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is awesome! Playing it on Xbox One. Best £15 I’ve spent in ages.

This week’s Hot Topic

The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Nick The Greek, who asks what movie or TV show would you most like to see turned into a video game?

Movie adaptations are pretty rare nowadays on consoles, but they can still happen – from Star Wars games to cult classics like Friday The 13th. But which film would you like to see get the big budget treatment and what kind of game would it be?

You can name any film or show you like, including those that have already had video games, but try to describe something that is at least reasonably practical to make. Why do you think your idea hasn’t been done before, and if it was made do you think it would be financially successful?
