Changing polices

I always used to be interested in the sales charts each week but I see nowadays that theyre filled with so many caveats because they dont count digital sales, which are increasing every year. I understand that Char-Track will start including digital sales from next year but Im curious to know who has actually moved from physical copies to mostly or entirely digital?

I know there have been a lot of people who were adamant that they never would, because the game would never belong to them and I was one of them. But for me now the price and convenience has overtaken such concerns to the point where Id spiting myself if I didnt take advantage of it. Or at least thats how it seems to me.

Indie games have also helped to normalise digital downloads for me and because theyre often the most interesting games around I have a hard time thinking bad of the means I get hold of them – because lets face it, theyd never be sold in normal shops. Curious to know what other peoples situations are, could make a good Hot Topic maybe?
UltraChris

GC: Yes, that sounds a good one for a future Hot Topic.

Netflix Games

I think Netflix should consider swiping up all the Telltale staff and starting Netflix Games Studios. They could create games for their varied TV shows as additional content on their streaming service with controls streamlined for using a TV remote. Whether this could be seen as further incentive for people to use their service (though they seem to be having no problem in that regard) or using the platform to sell the games as an added extra.

I do think it is sad that Telltale folded but judging by articles I have read chronicling the awful working conditions, maybe its a blessed relief for the staff. What is it about capitalism that breeds toxic management that chokes, beats, and stomps any golden geese to death, just so they can stockpile the eggs before it croaks?
Lord leaping Lynx

GC: It does seem a possibility but one of the obvious problems is that many staff have already left.

Big bang

For anyone worried that Marvels Spider-Man is going to be a one-off this tweet from one of the bosses of Marvel Studios is super encouraging. He compares the game to the first Iron Man movie, which surely implies that theyre planning to make it the first of a long series of games and not just Spidey.

Id love it if that was true but I do wonder where that leaves non-PlayStation owners. It would be very unusual if such a huge franchise as Marvel became a console exclusive but if Sony are looking for easy bets to win one over on Microsoft you cant do much better than that.

It did make me think of the reader who wrote in about Red Dead Redemption IIs PlayStation 4 exclusive DLC though and I have to agree that its unfair. I have the right console but Id be super annoyed if I didnt. So much so I dont know whether Id buy a PlayStation 4 or just swear off Sony for good. I hope it doesnt split up gamers like that.

Personal choice

Read your review again earlier and really want to buy the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection but I have a Switch and a PlayStation 4. Switch means portability and no Street Fighter IV download. PlayStation 4 means I get the extra game. I play on a Pro Controller on Switch and standard pad on PlayStation 4.

Which system is better suited for the collection in your opinion GC, peripheral wise? Id like to take it to bed on the Switch but if the PlayStation 4 pad is better and the free game is worth it, well Ill get that as its slightly cheaper.

Be nice to hear a few readers opinions too on the matter and their experiences.
Nick The Greek

GC: Neither controller offers much of an advantage but the PlayStation 4 has the option of proper fightpads and joysticks you could buy for the game. Its really up to you though. To us a fighting game doesnt seem particularly well suited to portable play, but you seem keen.

Paid-for extras

Hagrid may be against any extras, but would he be prepared to pay more for the game to get the extras free as unlockables? Games cost more to make, but most of us arent prepared to pay for it, so companies must either get creative in terms of generating extra money with cosmetic extras (or episodic content – Barney), scale back, or go bust.

PS: Manny, can I suggest you try Firewatch. Its a generally nicer world, with less of a focus on death, and a more thrillery atmosphere – at least to begin with.

GC: Firewatchs plot is still very focused on death.

Always annoying

As a fan of Hitman, the last game was the best yet and as close to next generation Blood Money as I could have ever imagined. There was but one problem. Always online! I mean, you could play the game offline but you couldnt do any challenges or unlock anything. It made replaying the game pointless and took away all achievement from the game.

It meant I waited until it was 10 quid on Steam before I purchased it. It would be fine if the achievements and challenges only required a connection at the start of the mission but if you lose connection during the game it automatically cuts the game and loses your progress.

Which brings me to my question. Why have we heard nothing about this feature in Hitman 2? And why has nobody asked the question? Online always single-player is just frustrating, especially in a game like this where an entire perfect run can be destroyed because of a split-second connection loss to a less than stable server.
Anthony Daniels

GC: We dont think theyve confirmed either way yet, but the new game is not episodic so theres a good chance theyd changed policies. It was always an anti-piracy measure though.

True fans

Ive just read about the story regarding Bethesda giving the 12-year-old child with terminally ill cancer the Fallout 76 game early due to him not being able to play the game when its officially released this November. And they delivered it by hand after a four-hour drive too!

What an amazing story, it just goes to show qhat the true gaming community is really all about when you hear about stories like this. (I must admit it brought tears to my eyes.)

Having just finished the main part of the story in Dragon Quest XI I have to say it is right up there with IV and V as my favourite games in the series. After the disappointments of VIII and IX this is near perfect. Though them making the bizarre choice to rename Martina as Jade really irritated me. Shes Martina, thats it.

From start to finish the game was fabulous, the Pep system replacing the bad Tension system, the forging mechanic being fun this time, the characters being weird and wonderful (apart from Sylvando, do not like him at all), it looks beautiful and the gameplay is refined to perfection for me. I also liked that it wasnt as open world as VIII because that was too much of a bore to traverse. Heck, I even used the casino more (to get Martinas bunny costume), rarely touched them before.

I do take issue with GC saying that the story in most Dragon Quest games dont really matter though. The outlines are basic sure but I think that is missing the point, here the journey is more important than the destination. Dragon Quest has always been about the smaller stories of each town, its inhabitants, your party members and it making you want to fight for them and save them while tying in, bit by bit to the main story.

You care for all the people you meet along the way, the characters you befriend and even shed tears such is the connection you may make. I did in IV, V and now with XI. I think that makes a great world and story, to me at least.
CerezoMask

GC: It may be good storytelling but the plot itself is always near irrelevant, which is the point we were making.

Its a sad story, but this is a lovely gesture from the Big N. Hope he gets to play & git good at the retail version.

Whats the chances of a Bloodborne 2?
Matt

GC: Pretty low for this generation.

This weeks Hot Topic

The subject for this weekends Inbox follows the annoucement of the PlayStation Classic mini console and asks what games you think should be included?

The console will contain 20 games, but only five have been confirmed so far: Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash!, R4 Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild ARMs. So we want to know what you think the other 15 should be?

You dont have to write in with 15 suggestions, just the ones you feel most passionate about. And please dont just write a list of games – we want to know why you think they should be included and what they mean to you and gaming history in general.
