Ellen DeGeneres made a cheeky joke about Jennifer Aniston’s marriage to Justin Theroux.
Don’t worry, this isn’t a case of ‘too soon’. The gag was a few days before the couple announced in a joint statement they had ‘lovingly’ decided to split after two years of marriage.
The actress appeared on Ellen’s show, which celebrated the talk show presenter’s 60th birthday two weeks ago, and talk turned to women having a crush on Jennifer when she was in Friends back in the 90s.
Ellen said: ‘I think a lot of people had crushes on you so they were hoping you were.’
They did? How do you guys ever know? What are the clues?’ Jennifer asked, ‘I don’t know how it works.’
Ellen replied: ‘It’s just I don’t know, flirty or something. But I do think girls had crushes on you.’
‘That’s so sweet,’ Jennifer said.
‘Well it’s too late now!’ Ellen quipped. Jennifer said: ‘Yeah’.
Jennifer and Justin said they had decided to split at the end of 2017, but have kept quiet about it until now.
The statement, released by Aniston’s publicist Stephen Huvane, said: ‘Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly.
‘Whatever else is printed about us that is not directly from us, is someone else’s fictional narrative. Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another.’
Jennifer and Justin described themselves as ‘two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship’.
The couple wed in 2015 at their Bel Air home.
