EgyptAir's in-flight magazine has reportedly apologised following its "surreal" article on Drew Barrymore which went viral on social media.

The airline originally stood by the "far from fake interview" with the Hollywood star, which began with an unflattering introduction detailing her "several unsuccessful marriages".

The piece was strewn with errors and dubious-sounding quotes.

Published in the airline's Horus magazine, it quickly drew attention after being posted on Twitter by Yemen analyst Adam Baron, with many questioning whether the journalist had actually spoken to the actress at all.

At the time, the apparent writer of the article, Aida Takla, responded to the criticism with a series of tweets – although from an unverified account – saying the article was genuine.

EgyptAir retweeted the post, saying thank you for the "clarification", and also responded to a few people on Twitter to say the article was "a professional magazine interview".

Now, both the magazine and its publisher have released a statement saying the confusion was down to translation issues.

The Ahram publishing agency said the interview was conducted in English by its Hollywood reporter Aida Takla, but then translated into Arabic and subsequently back into English.

"We apologise for any misunderstanding that might be interpreted as an offence to the great artist," the agency said.

Photos of the article posted by Mr Baron amassed thousands of retweets and likes on Twitter.

As well as her romantic history, the article also went on to discuss Barrymore's weight, with the interviewer asking for "her secret" – commenting that she has "returned to her previous graceful body" after gaining weight following pregnancy.

More from Drew Barrymore

It says Barrymore had failed relationships because she "lacked the male role model in her life after her parents' divorce" when she was a child.

The article also said she was taking an "unlimited vacation to play her most crucial role as a mother" to her two daughters.
