Celeste has had a pretty successful year (Picture: Matt Makes Games)

Celeste will receive new levels in 2019 one year after the games release.

Creator Matt Thorson, who also helmed Towerfall with his small team at Matt Makes Games, took to Twitter to make the announcement – while revealing the game had sold over 500,000 copies since its January launch.

Celeste sold over 500,000 copies in 2018, Thorson wrote. Thank you everyone who played it. We never expected it to reach so many people.

We're working on some farewell Celeste levels, which should be ready in early 2019. They're very hard. And we'll be announcing what's next for us in the new year as well. See you in 2019 ?

Its unclear whether the latter alludes to the announcement of a new title, but itd certainly be an impressive turnaround considering the five-year gap between Towerfall and Celeste.

Whatever they create next, itll be hard to top the success of Celeste – which bagged two Game Awards earlier this month for Best Independent Game and Games For Impact, along with soaring critical acclaim.

A chunk of the games success is down to the soundtrack by Lena Raine, who replied to Thorsons announcement to state the OST had sold 6,000 copies and was streamed on Spotify over 4 million times.

To add to this, the Celeste OST has sold over 6,000 copies across all platforms & streamed on Spotify over 4 million times. Ty so much for all your support, it's legitimately enabled me to launch my freelance career & continue to write rad music for you all ? https://t.co/vKAJWnjoh2

If youre unfamiliar, Celeste is a 2D platformer which tasks you with climbing a mountain as a young girl named Madeline – in what becomes a story about dealing with anxiety and depression.

If youre yet to check out the title and own an Xbox One, Celeste was recently announced as part of Januarys Games With Gold, alongside WRC 6 FIA World Rally Championship.
