As one half of the successful music group Broods, Georgia Nott may have been used to walking into studios and venues. But what she couldn't get used to was the lack of women working in these spaces.
Alongside her brother, Caleb, the New Zealander has released two top ten albums with Broods and toured the US opening for major acts Sam Smith and Haim, but the more entrenched she became within the music industry the more she noticed the inequality.
"I decided that this is my opportunity to make a statement and to get that conversation going of why there are less women in creative industries than men, and why is it that every time I go on tour there are no women in the venue, and whenever I go into a studio and see women working in a studio I'm surprised," Nott told AAP.
Buoyed by the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements and angered by her own experiences of everyday sexism, Nott started writing songs that weren't necessarily for Broods, and realised that it was the beginning of a different musical project.
Nott thought back over the times she was wolf-whistled at as a teenager, or when her friends were forced into compromising situations against their will, and her songs began to take shape.
"The song Daughter of the King is about the fact that women don't get into abusive relationships because they deserve it, it's a lot more complicated than that. Women don't get pulled down a dark alley and taken advantage of when they're drunk because they deserve it. And the idea that they hold some of the blame for what has happened to them is so outrageously f***** up," she said.
Nott began to gather together an all-female team to help shape this song and nine more into an album, The Venus Project: Volume One, which has been released on International Women's Day.
All the musicians, engineers, producers, artists and management working on the album were women, and Nott hopes it's the beginning of something bigger.
"I hope that one day I'll be able to look back and see that so many other women have been involved in this project as possible. "
