Verne Troyer, the actor made famous by his portrayal of Mini-Me in the second and third installments of the “Austin Powers”franchise, has died.
Earlier this month, TMZ announced that Troyer had been taken into custody by police after friends reported him as intoxicated and suicidal. He was subsequently treated for possible alcohol poisoning and placed on a 72-hour hold for evaluation.
At the time, the stars Instagram account requested that fans “keep Verne in your thoughts and prayers. Hes getting the best care possible and is resting comfortably. Appreciate the support from family, friends, and fans around the world. We will keep you updated here.”
The 2-foot, 8-inch celebrity had long struggled with alcoholism, having been hospitalized just over a year ago preceding one of multiple stints in rehab.
A statement on Troyers Facebook page confirming his death called him “an extremely caring individual” who “wanted to make everyone smile, be happy, and laugh…Even though his stature was small and his parents often wondered if hed be able to reach up and open doors on his own in his life, he went on to open more doors for himself and others than anyone could have imagined. He also touched more peoples hearts than he will ever know.”
Troyer began his career as a 9-month-olds stunt double in 1994s Babys Day Out. Five years later, the diminutive actor made his indelible mark as the miniaturized clone of Dr. Evil, maniacal nemesis to British spy Austin Powers in comedian Mike Myerss groovy send-up of James Bond films.
On Saturday, Myers remembered Troyer as “the consummate professional and a beacon of positivity.”
“It is a sad day,” Myers noted, “but I hope he is in a better place. He will be greatly missed.”
Troyer was 49.
