The Game Awards - where you pleased by what you saw?

The Game Awards – where you pleased by what you saw?

The evening Inbox is already loving Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as one reader approves of The Game Awards award winners.

Baby steps

I have to admit I was pretty disappointed with The Game Awards in the end. Its heart seemed to be in the right place but most of those announcements were pretty disappointing. They were either indie games where you had no idea what they were (or Dragon Age games were it was the same problem) or stuff theyd already spoiled the previous day. I dont understand that point of teasing Crash Bandicoot and Far Cry when the teases were so blatant there was no space for doubt.

I think Mortal Kombat 11 was just leaked but either way that ended up not being a surprise either. Its good that we can have a fairly dignified games award ceremony nowadays, and I approved of most of the winners (nice to know GC had at least a small, Trump-sized hand in it all).

Although one of the things that struck me was what a terrible presenter Ninja was. Id never really seen him talk outside of a few clips and it was obvious he wasnt a professional. He didnt even seem very funny or charismatic.

But things like this make it obvious that games are still a new medium and still unsure how to present themselves or distance themselves from things like movies. This is a very small step forward but at least it is a positive one.

Consistent disappointment

I really dont like that Reggie guy from Nintendo of America. He seems so smug and untrustworthy – isnt that like the opposite of what you want from a marketing guy? He also constantly trolls us with Metroid news. He always seem to wear Metroid badges or T-shirts to The Game Awards and yet never shows anything!

The Persona 5 thing was kind of cool but why not announce a Switch port at the same time? Its obviously possible, and they dont have to show anything new considering they didnt for the fighter either. It just all seems the absolute minimum they could get away with, which summed up the show overall for me.

Im glad I didnt stay up all night watch it and am glad GC took the bullet for us all there.

All gravy

How good is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate though? That spirit mode is addictive as gravy and chips…. its replaced both Red dead Redemption II and Assassins Creed Odyssey as the current game in both my thoughts AND my dreams!

I was up until the wee small hours (in fact any longer and I couldve probably watched The Game Awards) with its one more go and Ohhh, whos that? type of shenanigans keeping me playing and playing and playing some more… awesome, awesome game… and I cant wait to get back on it.

Prime television

This week I got the opportunity to watch Going for GoldenEye on Amazon Prime and I came away quite impressed.

Its a spoof documentary following a couple of entrants into the world championship of GoldenEye multiplayer. Its full of in-jokes and Easter eggs referring to GoldenEye, clearly showing its a 60-minute love letter to the game and rightly so. I personally have put many hours under my belt back in the day so it was a great nostalgia throwback in that regard.

I would highly recommend watching it as its no secret us gamers feel more than a little short changed when it comes to TV/movies.

Dual-wielding

Back when GoldenEye 007 was released the controllers only had one analogue stick, which I was fine with but GoldenEye had a controller setting that allowed you to use two controllers if you had them. Back then I thought this was just an unusual implementation of a two-player mode but since then pretty much every console has had dual analogue sticks and allowed first person shootrs to work well on a console.

Has anyone ever gone back to play GoldenEye using the two controller setup and found it much more fluid or easier to play with the practice theyve had with more modern games using this set up?

Racing away with it

Does anyone else find it really strange how this generation, apart from Project CARS and the limited Gran Turismo, that theres been no other proper driving games with full career modes for PlayStation 4?

Its like Sony just let Microsoft run away with it with the Forza games. Is there any news about a new full Gran Turismo game?
Simon

GC: Sony has said theyre working on Grand Turismo 7 but there hasnt been any substantial news for ages. Given the weird way Gran Turismo 6 was released its also impossible to guess whether itd be PlayStation 4 or 5.

Believe it when you see it

If you accept that The Game Awards was never going to feature any huge surprise announcements then I think it was a pretty good show all told. My highlight though was the Psychonauts 2 trailer. Its been so long since it was announced that I had almost forgotten about it.

The gameplay looked promising though and it is up at the top of my most anticipated list again now. Although I agree with your comments that you wont believe it is real until you play it.

Nice but quiet

The Game Awards were nice with a positive vibe, a couple of nice reveals but ultimately pretty uneventful.

Highlights for me were Below being on Game Pass on day one, Rage 2 still looking awesome, and Obsidians new game The Outer Worlds. Nice to see PlayStation 4 listed as format for it too, as I wondered with the recent Microsoft acquisition.

GC: Microsoft probably didnt have any choice given The Outer Worlds publishing deal must have been signed a long time ago, but its still nice to see.

Deserved winners

I was really chuffed to see Celeste and Astro Bot win awards this year, I had high hopes for both to get some recognition – gamers themselves already know how brilliant they both are (especially here on GC) but with these awards things Im always mindful they sometimes have agendas and favourites so wouldnt have been surprised if they hadnt.

The big surprise was God Of War though, I thought it was the best of the nominees up for the main award but Id have bet my months wages on Red Dead Redemption II getting it. As good as Rockstars game is on a technical level personally I was bored of it after eight to 10 hours and theres too many niggles, annoying features and clunky mechanics for me. Dare I say it, but at no point in my playthrough did I think this is fun.

On the other hand, playing through Astro Bot I was smiling from start to finish (maybe through gritted teeth on the shark boss).

God Of War I was shocked how much I enjoyed it despite not being a God Of War fan at all, and Celeste blew me away and I recommended it to every gamer I know with those that listened to the recommendation also loving it. The fact all three were rewarded somewhat made me happy and not so bad that I didnt enjoy Red Dead Redemption II as much as everyone else seems to be.

Ill give games awards more respect in the future if they keep on rewarding games that are mostly about having fun, and not so much ones that spend time on physics for horses dangly bits and realistic facial hair growth.

Hopes for another Astro Bot and Celeste game seem to be quite realistic now! God Of War 2 was never in doubt after the ending, amazing reviews, and massive sales but I did worry my fave ever VR game might not get a follow-up, now Im optimistic (please GC magic, Moss 2 as well and Ill be ecstatic).

GC: Theres definitely more Moss on the way, sorting out a publishing deal seems to be the only reason we havent heard about it yet.

The new Obsidian game The Outer Worlds looks a bit like it could be Borderlands the RPG. Itll do.

You werent joking about a lot of those Game Awards trailers looking the same. Some of them even seemed to have almost identical names and concepts!

This weeks Hot Topic

The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader Preston, who asks what older game would you still like to see get a remake or remaster?

With games even as obscure as Toki now getting full-blown remakes, and following the huge success of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro The Dragon, we want to know what games you think still need to make a comeback and whether you think they could really be a hit again.

It can be any game from any era, even if theyve still got current sequels, but we want to know exactly what you would – and wouldnt – change about the game. How much would the graphics have to change and how outdated will the gameplay seem to modern gamers? And most importantly, do you honestly think itll ever happen?
