BIARRITZ, France — U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that France will have to strike a deal over taxing digital giants in order to avoid tariffs on French products like wine.

“Am I gonna tariff French wine? Well, it depends on the deal we work out on the digital tax,” Trump told reporters ahead of a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on the sidelines of the G7 summit.

“We are negotiating right now,” he added, without providing more information on what kind of negotiations he was referring to, or his timeframe.

The French digital services tax, which was signed into law last month, targets companies with at least €750 million in global revenue and digital sales of €25 million in France from certain digital activities.
