On the back of releasing his Killer album last year, collecting three ARIA nominations and just this week picking up a nomination for best Blues and Roots album in the upcoming AIR Awards, Dan Sultan's decided to hit the road again for 44 solo dates across the country. Killer debuted in fifth spot on the ARIA album chart last July and next month Sultan's label, Liberation Records, will release a collaborative EP called Killer Under A Blood Moon with a selection of Killer's tracks reworked alongside Dave Le'aupepe from Gang Of Youths, Meg Mac, A.B. Original and Camp Cope. "I'm really proud of Killer … this is another way to show these songs from a different perspective," Sultan said. The EP will be released on May 18 and comes with a couple of bonus tracks. And if that's not enough to keep him busy, the Sultan of Everything has just added an extra Melbourne show to his sold out Memo Music Hall dates in Melbourne, playing a matinee performance on Sunday, April 22, before heading to the Spiegeltent in Wollongong on April 26, Canberra on April 28 and two Sydney Opera House shows on May 2 and 3. Sobering Thoughts
(Aztec Music/Bang! Records)
★★★★
Here's a tip for any eagle-eyed Record Store Day hunters – snap up this album if you come across it because it was released in criminally low numbers back in 2010. Written (mostly), produced and starring SPJ, Sobering Thoughts is a rough diamond in an expansive catalogue under his own name and bands too numerous to list here. From the twangy Bouquet of Troubles dripping with it's bluesy lyrics to the unmistakeable Jonesness of (What Can I Do To) Change Your Mind, it's rousing stuff. Backed by his loyal Committee, these songs shine.
