After slamming white people as disgusting, Sinead OConnor has backtracked and apologised for her racist comments, made last year.

In October the singer announced she has converted to Islam, changing her name to Shuhada Davitt. However, in the midst of her tweets about her practice of Islam, the 52-year-old made a statement which she acknowledged was so racist I never thought my soul could ever feel it.

The Nothing Compares 2U singer wrote in November last year: Im terribly sorry. What Im about to say is something so racist I never thought my soul could ever feel it. But truly I never wanna spend time with white people again (if thats what non-muslims are called).

Not for one moment, for any reason. They are disgusting.

Now, after making a return to television performing hit Nothing Compares 2 U on RTE flagship The Late Late Show on Saturday, accompanied by the Irish Chamber Orchestra, shes apologised for her comments.

As regards to remarks I made while angry and unwell, about white people… they were not true at the time and they are not true now, she wrote on Twitter on Sunday morning.

I was triggered as a result of islamophobia dumped on me. I apologize for hurt caused. That was one of many crazy tweets lord knows.

Fans rallied behind the superstar, offering their support and understanding in forgiving her for her past remarks.

One supporter wrote: You were unwell. All is forgiven and you are still loved.

Another echoed those same sentiments as they replied: Good to see you back on track. We all struggle! Keep on singing x

Fans insisted they would remain by her side, as one wrote: Whatever works for you. Thats what counts. Good to see you coming out the other side of it and looking well and happy.

At the time, Sinead tried to explain her post, wondering why her Twitter page hadnt been shut down in the wake of the shocking outburst in November.

Explaining her recent posts, Sinead added: I dont really hate white people, its just the way I see it is Twitter would close my account if I said I did because they closed my account for saying I dont like nuns murdering babies in Ireland.

She added: I was rather hoping they would close my page if I said I hated white people. But they didnt.

It comes after, Sinead revealed yesterday she had found home in the religion.

Dress in a red hijab, she told host Ryan Tubridy: The word revert refers to the idea that were you to study the Quran, you would realise you were a Muslim all your life and you didnt realise it. Thats what happened to me. Im 52, I grew up in a very different Ireland than the one that exists now.

It was a very oppressed country, religiously speaking. Everybody was miserable, nobody was getting any joy in God.
