Serena Williams has admitted she felt out of her comfort zone going topless to raise awareness for breast cancer.

The 36-year-old shared her thoughts behind the campaign and why she decided to do it on social media.

The tennis star showed off her singing chops with a cover of I Touch Myself by iconic rock band The Divinyls. Its all in aid of raising money for Breast Cancer Network Australia, which hopes to encourage women to check themselves for signs of the disease.

Weve already seen previews of the campaign but now that the full video is out, Serena has spoken about it while sharing footage of herself completely topless – still of course covering up her most private bits.

Taking to her Instagram she said: Yes, this put me out of my comfort zone, but I wanted to do it because its an issue that affects all women of all colors, all around the world.[sic]

Early detection is key – it saves so many lives. I just hope this helps to remind women of that.

A preview of the campaign aired on Australias The Project last week and features a close-up of Serena, seemingly naked, singing the rock bands classic 1990 hit.

Speaking about the apt choice of song, Serena told host Lisa Wilkinson: Honestly, I would definitely not classify myself as a singer, but Chrissy and The Divinyls were amazing.

Chrissys voice is just spectacular, you know, and for me it was (an) unbelievable cause and unfortunately we lost Chrissy to breast cancer but the I Touch Myself song was to let everyone know that its important to touch yourself and check up on yourself.

Serena added: Its putting myself in a very vulnerable moment but just to make a huge statement I think is really important.

The Divinyls frontwoman Chrissy Amphlett lost her battle with breast cancer in 2013.

Later in the preview, Serena modelled a snakeskin bra called The Chrissy, named after the late singer and designed by Berlei. All proceeds from sales go to Breast Cancer Network Australia.

Serena has become increasingly involved with fashion in recent years, and launched her own self-titled line earlier this year.

Although the interview ended on a warm note with Serena gifting journalist Lisa Wilkinson with a Chrissy bra, things got a little awkward earlier in the sit-down.

The tennis players PR interrupted the interview when Lisa continued to press Serena on her controversial moments at the US Open this month.

However, after a few moments of tension, Serena gave the go-ahead to continue the interview.
