Red Dead Redemption II - YouTube takes a stand

Red Dead Redemption II – YouTube takes a stand

A number of videos showing Red Dead players purposefully killing suffragettes and Mexicans have been deleted from YouTube.

11-11: Memories RetoldGame review: 11-11 Memories Retold is a moving First World War tribute

Rockstar Games is not known for its strong female characters, but Red Dead Redemption has always fared better in that regard than the Grand Theft Auto series.

Red Dead Redemption II in particular goes out of its way to feature various suffragette characters, including one mission where protagonist Arthur Morgan transports a group around a small town in order to protect them from violent anti-protestors.

There are also suffragette characters in the main city of Saint Denis, and one in particular has become a regular target of abuse for certain YouTubers.

Because any non-story character in the game can be killed, YouTubers have posted videos where theyre fed to alligators, hogtied and run over on train tracks, or otherwise just beaten up and killed.

At least eight videos have now been deleted for violating YouTubes community guides on gratuitous violence, nudity, dangerous and illegal activities, and hate speech, although a quick search reveals many more remain.

More: Gaming

The most infamous have been from YouTuber Shirrako, who posted such charmingly named videos as Red Dead Redemption 2 – Beating up annoying feminist and Red Dead Redemption 2 – Deporting A Mexican.

You can imagine what the comments were like.

The most successful of the videos had over 1.5 million views, but it remains to be seen whether the deletion will encourage more copycat videos or if YouTubes unusually proactive approach will have stemmed the tide.
