PS5 Release Date News: NEW Sony VR controller leaked for next PlayStation console? (Pic: DS)

Sony has filed a new patent for PSVR, which could potentially be a new controller for the PS5 or the next-generation VR device.

The patent, which Sony has titled “CONTROLLER HAVING LIGHTS DISPOSTED ALONG A LOOP OF THE CONTROLLER”, has been registered by Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan in the past few weeks.

To all intents and purposes, the new patent will be an upgrade of the current PSVR Move controller, with more sensors in a loop, rather than the ball that's located at the top of the PS Move currently.

This new controller seems to be built from the ground up for VR, featuring similarities to controllers from Oculus and HTC Vive, rather than building on the old PS Move tech that Sony used for PSVR.

This comes as we're seeing Sony renew its focus on VR, as Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida announced earlier this year that he wants to see projects that gamers can engage with for a 'longer time'.

Based on such expectations, I came up with the strategy of making full-scale games of larger scale in the second and third years.

"Titles with a deeper gaming will continue to increase in the future," he explained.

When asked for example Yoshida noted that future releases such as Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Firewall Zero Hour are good examples of how this could impact the VR system.

Looking further into the future there's also games like Blood & Truth and Déraciné which both feel like more robust games and not 'experiences' which has often been the main stick to beat the PSVR with.

It'll be interesting to see how this manifests in the future and whether the next PSVR unit is built to help better facilitate longer engagement and immersion.

It is expected the PSVR 2 will be coinciding with the release of the PS5 – though we don't know specifically when that is likely to be.

Based on the latest rumours from Sony, the next generation wont be released until 2020.

Most analysts predict 2020 as a likely release date for the PSVR 2, and more hardware. It is also a possibility the PSVR 2 will release much later than the PS5 (the same way that PSVR didn't release in time with the PS4, instead waiting three years before coming to the platform).

So whilst we're seeing Sony file new patents and pour more money into research and development for the next generation, it could be a while before we see the fruits of the company's labour.

We look forward to hearing more about PSVR's successor.
