PlayStation Classic – 20 genuine classics… more or less

Sony has finally revealed all the games to be included in its retro classic mini PS1 and its certainly been worth the wait…

Castlevania Requiem: Symphony Of The Night & Rondo Of BloodGame review: Castlevania Requiem is a classic double pack

Its over a month now since Sony first announced the PlayStation Classic, their take on Nintendos popular Classic Mini NES and SNES retro consoles.

At the time they only announced five games (Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash!, R4 Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild ARMs) some of which were not exactly the first games to come to mind when you think of the original PlayStation.

That left some worry amongst fans that thered be a lot of filler and some disappointing omissions, but in the end the line-up is impressively solid.

• Battle Arena Toshinden
• Cool Boarders 2
• Destruction Derby
• Final Fantasy VII
• Grand Theft Auto
• Intelligent Qube
• Jumping Flash!
• Metal Gear Solid
• Mr Driller
• Oddworld: Abes Oddysee
• Rayman
• Resident Evil: Directors Cut
• Revelations: Persona
• Ridge Racer Type 4
• Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
• Syphon Filter
• Tekken 3
• Tom Clancys Rainbow Six
• Twisted Metal
• Wild ARMs

There are, inevitability, some surprising no-shows, perhaps most obviously Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot – the main characters of which were both seen as unofficial PlayStation mascots at one time or another.

The absence of WipEout is also disappointing, but perhaps inevitable given that although it was highly influential in Europe its seen as a minor franchise in the US and Japan (although not as minor as the likes of Intelligent Qube or Wild ARMs, youd argue).

It also seems odd not to include the original, iconic, Ridge Racer even if the fourth entry was a better game.

More: Gaming

The PlayStation Classic will be released on December 3 for a very reasonable £89.99.

As well as the 20 games it comes with two full-size wired controllers (the pre-DualShock ones without analogue controllers), an HDMI cable, and a virtual memory card.
