Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres and the Hadid sisters are among some of the celebrities affected by the deadly mudslides in California.

Heavy rain in Southern California has triggered mudslides that have left at least 15 people dead, and the town of Montecito was hardest hit.

Some of the residents of the 9,000-strong enclave include A-listers, who have been sharing pictures of the damage and sending prayers to their neighbours on social media.

"What a day," Oprah wrote, sharing short videos on Instagram of gas fires, mudslides and helicopters.

"Praying for our community again in Santa Barbara. Woke up to this blazing gas fire. Then swipe left to see how deep the mud is in my backyard."

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres was another Montecito resident who shared videos of the chaos, pleading with people to help with the rescue efforts.

"This is not a river. This is the 101 freeway in my neighbourhood right now. Montecito needs your love and support," she wrote.

"I've love[d] being part of the Montecito community. I send love to all the families and the amazing rescue workers braving these mudslides."

Actor Rob Lowe, who has a home in Montecito, said he was "mourning the dead" and "praying for survivors".

Mourning the dead in our little town tonight. Praying for the survivors and preparing for whatever may come. #Montecito

"Mourning the dead in our little town tonight. Praying for the survivors and preparing for whatever may come," he wrote.

"Media talking aboutOprah 'maybe' running for President in 3 years. Meanwhile, AS WE SPEAK, her Montecito home's a staging ground for helicopter rescues. Priorities? Anyone?"

VS models Gigi and Bella Hadid, who grew up in Montecito, prayed for their "beautiful hometown".

"My beautiful home town, just after getting through weeks of wildfire, has been hit by a major storm," Gigi wrote.

"That river is the 101 freeway. Please keep the families of Santa Barbara in your thoughts and prayers."

Her sister Bella remembered "when something similar happened in La Conchita about 12 years ago, so close to us and how much it took to rebuild".

"My beautiful home town of Montecito…. Where my roots were placed, where my mother raised me and my family. Completely under water. I really can't believe it," she added.

"I can't imagine how Montecito feels now. I am so sorry. As always – please send websites for donations. I'm ready to help. Thank you to the rescue, firefighters and security teams in SB for staying strong and your hard work to pull out anybody and anything in sight."

The mudslides are the result of heavy rains which hit California's southern region on Monday, just one month after the largest wildfire in the state's history.

At least 25 people were injured and several more are unaccounted for during the fire.

Last week, Oprah said she could still smell the smoke when she returned to her home.
