No Mans Sky NEXT is a hit again, even though theres no multiplayer via GOG

No Mans Sky NEXT – its also 50% off on Steam today

Users numbers have seen a sharp improvement thanks to todays update, but theres been a nasty surprise for GOG.com customers.

One of the most controversial video games of the current generation has completed whats hoped to be its final redemption, as the NEXT update went live today for No Mans Sky on consoles and PC.

Its the first time the game has been on Xbox One, but the PlayStation 4 and PC versions came out almost two years ago now. Its hard to track how exactly it did on Sonys console but on PC the number of players hit an almost record-breaking 212,321 players on day one.

A month later though, the figures were down to just a couple of thousand. But theres already signs of renewed interest with todays traffic, which you can track via Steam Charts, peaking at over 40,000.

Theres still a long way to go to get anywhere near the launch day highs but clearly the promise of unlimited base building, a third person camera, and co-op has caught peoples imaginations once again.

Except that if you bought the game via GOG.com there is no multiplayer, which developer Hello Games has only chosen to tell people today.

The version sold via GOG.com doesnt have any DRM but its also single-player only, and will stay that way until later this year.

The multiplayer component will not be ready at launch; we expect it to be released later this year as full multiplayer parity remains in the pipeline, said Hello Games in a statement on the GOG.com forums.

For a small, independent studio, developing the feature across multiple platforms is a hugely ambitious and technical challenge which resulted in this delayed release. Hello Games is however joining forces with GOG.com to introduce full multiplayer via the GOG Galaxy platform.

Hello Games recently vowed to do better at communicating with the community, but as you can imagine that now seems like a hollow promise to anyone buying the game from GOG.com
