Smash Bros Ultimate is getting a minor change due to a backlash (Picture: Nintendo)

Nintendo has confirmed its removing a Native American reference from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate after it was deemed offensive.

The outcry revolved around a design on character Mr. Game & Watch, who first appeared on Nintendo LCD handhelds back in 1980 and morphs into numerous costumes for attacks in the Super Smash Bros. series.

One of these attacks references 1982s Fire Attack, which sees you defend a fort from Native Americans with feathers in their hair, equipped with burning torches.

The depiction caused uproar online after being spotted in the recent Nintendo Direct for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and now Nintendo has responded by stating it will be removed in an update.

In a statement issued to Source Gaming, a Nintendo spokesperson said: Nintendo has been planning to distribute an update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that removes the feather from the silhouette of Mr. Game & Watch.
