Nintendo have announced Super Smash Bros. for Switch will be playable at this year’s E3, with an invitational tournament set to take place at the event.
Following the recent Direct which took (mostly) everyone by surprise with the title’s early announcement, Nintendo have revealed they’re inviting a select group of players to play Super Smash Bros. and Splatoon 2 at this year’s E3 on 11th – 12th June in Los Angeles.
Billed as the Super Smash Bros Invitational 2018 and Splatoon 2 World Championship, the two events will showcase high-level players from around the globe.
European players for the Splatoon 2 portion will be decided by the Splatoon European Championship in Polymanga, Switzerland, which kicks off on March 30.
Nintendo is also set to host the Splatoon 2 Inkling Open 2018 qualifiers in the US/Canada region, with the winning team qualifying for a spot at the E3 event, with other teams from Japan and Australia/New Zealand also to be decided in other tournaments.

This year’s Smash Invitational follows their previous tournament at E3 in the run-up to the Wii U version, which saw Gonzalo ‘Zero’ Barrios bag the trophy from Nintendo Of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.

We’re still left in the dark however whether the Switch title is a port of the Wii U version or a brand new game. If they leave it any longer though, we’re sure a potential up-scaled port will only be met with disappointment.
This year’s E3 takes place from 12th-14th June at the Los Angeles Convention Centre, which will also see a star-studded celebrity tournament for Fortnite.
