SINGAPORE – She has collected jewellery since she was 10 years old, where she would ask for a piece for every special occasion. Her mother would take her to the goldsmith to choose; over the years, her eye for gold jewellery turned to diamonds, then rarer stones.

Today, Ms Audrey Nai, who is in her late 30s, has a collection of jewellery in the hundreds, "almost enough to open a shop". The hobbyist collector, who works in the finance department of a local IT firm, also has a WhatsApp chat group called Baubles with fellow jewellery enthusiasts – who update if they find good deals travelling abroad.
