Rap superstar Kanye West has called US President Donald Trump his "brother" and that the "mob" cannot make him "not love him".

West, 40, tweeted to his more than 18 million followers: "You don't have to agree with trump [sic] but the mob can't make me not love him. We are both dragon energy.

"He is my brother. I love everyone. I don't agree with everything anyone does. That's what makes us individuals. And we have the right to independent thought."

Mr Trump retweeted West's post, writing: "Thank you Kanye, very cool!"

A second of West's tweets, a photo of a signed Make America Great Again hat (MAGA), was retweeted by the President, so said simply: MAGA!

West met the then president-elect in December 2016. He told reporters that during his meeting with Mr Trump in 2016 they talked about "life".

The rapper, who has three children with his wife Kim Kardashian West, added: "If your friend jumps off the bridge you don't have to do the same. Ye being Ye [sic] is a fight for you to be you.

"For people in my life the idea of Trump is pretty much a 50 50 split but I don't tell a Hillary supporter not to support Hillary, I love Hillary too."

He later posted: "My wife just called me and she wanted me to make this clear to everyone. I don't agree with everything Trump does. I don't agree 100% with anyone but myself."

A flurry of activity on the Twitter account of the rap artist, on Wednesday also featured a tweet in which West claimed to make more money from shoes than Michael Jordan.

West also fuelled speculation that he had split with his manager Scooter Braun, tweeting, "I can't be managed".

Not all of West's tweets related to politics or business, with one stating: "I'm nice at ping pong".

His wife took her own Twitter to defend her husband, saying "he has always been expressive" while criticising some media outlets for "trying to demonize my husband".

Kardashian West went on to suggest she was not a fan of the President, writing "most people (including myself) have very different feelings & opnions about this" before adding that she understood her husband was expressing his opinion.

To the media trying to demonize my husband let me just say this… your commentary on Kanye being erratic & his tweets being disturbing is actually scary. So quick to label him as having mental health issues for just being himself when he has always been expressive is not fair
