How to add friends on Pokemon Go? Trading, Gifts and how to increase Friendship levels

Pokemon GO recently announced that it was adding some major new features to the game. Primarily, it was going to add the ability to make friends, trade with friends and send gifts (you guessed it) to friends.

And earlier this evening, Niantic finally pushed through the games latest update, surprising players with the features suddenly going live without any notice.

For the time being, some of these features are gated off to certain players of a certain level.

But we'll explain more of that below. For now, here's your guide to help you make the most of these new features in the future, starting with how to add friends.

Adding friends on Pokemon GO couldn't be any simpler, but it is, like most Nintendo friend systems, very secure.

Each player will have their own Trainer Code that they can share with friends to exchange friend requests.

You'll need a person's Trainer Code in order to make them your friend. There is no other way. In much the same way as players currently do on the Nintendo Switch

Once someone has accepted your friend request, that player will appear on your Friends List, allowing you to interact in a variety of ways.

For younger players it's worth noting that Niantic stressed that Trainers who "require parental approval and registration through the Pokémon Trainer Club to play Pokémon Go will be unable to trade with other Trainers in the game."

When you have your friends trainer code, enter it into the app and they'll be sent a request. Once they accept, you'll be friends and see each other on your friends list. This will also display various info such as the last time they logger in, what they last caught and much more.

It's worth noting for you really popular people our there, that for the time being there is a Friends List cap of 200 in Pokemon GO.

Pokemon GO: Friends and Trading features REVEALED

Take a look at some of the new Friends and Trading features coming to Pokemon GO this summer.

What are the Friendship levels and Bonuses?

These are the following friendship levels and bonuses.

Good friend: Trade all Pokemon except Mythical

Great friend: Stardust discount for trading, attack bonus during gym battles with that friend, one additional Premiere Ball for raids alongside that friend

Ultra friend: Additional stardust discount for trading, larger attack bonus during gym battles with that friend, two additional Premiere Balls for raids alongside that friend

Best friend: Major stardust discount for trading, largest attack bonus during gym battles with that friend, four additional Premiere Balls for raids alongside that friend

Niantic told us in a Q&A at E3 2018 that these bonuses do not stack. So, for example. If you're raiding with a Best Friend (which gives you 4 extra balls during raids) and an Ultra Friend (2 extra balls during raids), youll only receive the bonus from your highest friend in the raid group.

So youd only receive 4 extra balls for the raid, not 6.

How to increase Pokemon Go Friendship Levels?

When you make a friend you can start levelling up that friendship. You can do this in a number of ways.

Firstly by trading with them, which lets face i,t you won't be doing everyday.

However, you can also level up more regular by sending friends gifts which you'll gain from Pokestops.

It's also worth noting that, unlike trades which need to be done within 100meters of one another, sending gifts can be done remotely, from anywhere in the world.

Finally, you'll also earn friendship by participating in raids and gym battles together.

How long does it take to increase friendship levels?

As mentioned, you have four stages of 'friend' within the game. But levelling up that friendship level will take some time.

For starters, your friendship level can only increase once per day per friend.

It will also take significantly more time between the various levels.

Niantic outlined the following ranges for achieving a friendship level:

Good friend: 1 day
Great friend: 7 days
Ultra friend: 30 days
Best friend: 90 days
