Scared yet? (Picture: A24)

Hereditary was touted as one scary mofo before it hit the screens.

With a stressed Toni Collette (Annie) and her creepy miniatures, to her daughter Charlie (played by Milly Shapiro) and her even creepier and satanic proclivities for cutting the heads of pigeons, a lot of people noped out of cinemas pretty quickly.

And now the movie is out, and its frightened the bejeebus out of most people who saw it, it has been confirmed to be the scariest flick of the year.

Dont believe us? Its been scientifically proven.

Well, sort of.

The studio behind the movie, A24, whacked a whole bunch of heart rate monitors (AKA Apple Watches) on punters as they took in the delights of the horror movie and it turned out viewers hearts were figuratively doing backflips.

More so than a normal heart should be functioning.

During some heady moments of the film, when it was really going off, some viewers heart rates were pushed to 160 beats per minute.

Thats a sprinting pace, FYI.

Side note: this movie could be a great cardio workout if you didnt feel like going for a run today.

The proof is (sort-of) in the pudding (Picture: A24)

The company released a graph that showed five viewers heart rates and it appeared things really got jumpy after the 90-minute mark.

The film runs for two hours seven minutes, so sorry to say it seems like that last halfa is really going to have you on the edge of your seat.

Or underneath it.

The film was released in June and became A24s highest-grossing film, premiering with $77.5 million (£60.1 million) at the box office.

Sweet dreams, everyone.
