Still the best

Im kind of surprised Nintendo hasnt made more of this fact but apparently its Zelda: Ocarina Of Times 20th anniversary today. Thats amazing on multiple levels, and thats not even accounting for the fact that it makes me feel old. I played the 3DS version not too long ago and it was still just as amazing as ever. And its funny to think that the only reason its not still universally regarded as the best game ever is because Breath Of The Wild has taken over from it.

Theyre two very different games though – which is good – and for me Ocarina is still my personal favourite. For me there are only three truly top class 3D games, and thats it, Majoras Mask, and Breath Of The Wild. Ocarina Of Time isnt just amazing for its time though, its legitimately one of the best made video games ever with incredibly freedom, variety, and just the best pacing Ive ever seen in what is essentially an open world game.

Theres certainly nothing from the PS1 era that stands up even close to as well, including Super Mario 64, and I doubt therell ever be another game that goes unrivalled for so long. Thats a good thing in a way, because I cant wait to see how Nintendo follows up Breath Of The Wild but for me Ocarina Of Time has been the best game ever for 20 years and Im not sure it wont manage another 20 as well.

Anniversary makeover

I see its Zelda: Ocarina Of Times 20th anniversary today, so many happy returns Navi and co. The obvious question that comes to my mind though is whether Nintendo would ever consider remaking the game? The 3DS game is a remaster, essentially, but would Nintendo ever consider making something similar to the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro remakes where the graphics are completely revamped for the modern age?

I have a feeling they wouldnt but I would totally welcome it. The basic gameplay and design is already perfect so the only changes Id make is to improve the visuals and make it properly open world. Not the biggest job in the world so Id like to think it wouldnt stop Nintendo from doing other things as well.

Id also be tempted to add in voice acting as well. You wouldnt need much and as long as there was the option to turn it off I dont see the harm.

Learning lessons

Loved that Fallout 76 review. Great to see the game getting the recognition it deserves and I knew GameCentral wouldnt be mincing their words. Why exactly its so bad I dont know, whether its a technical thing, budget, or bad management but the thing that gets me is the price at the end of the review… £60!

Bethesda knew what state it was in when they released and yet they were happy to have people pay that for something they knew to be broken and unfit for purpose. Surely the sensible thing to do was to either delay or – and heres an idea – making it free or half price until its fixed.

That wouldve produced actual positive word of mouth and I think wouldve worked out very well. Admitting your mistakes is sometimes all you need in a bad situation, but of course thats not what happened at all and I cant wait for Bethesda to start blaming other people (I bet journos will be first in line) and generally sulking. Theyve no-one to blame but themselves but I wouldnt bet on them learning anything from their mistakes.

Wasted effort

I absolutely recognised what you said at the end of the Spider-Man DLC review. These expansions are always the same: just a rerun of the main game with like one or two small new features. Usually theres little or no story though, so the gameplay youve already got kind of tired of seems even worse without any kind of context.

To be honest I never even consider getting it, despite loving the main game, and I doubt Id feel different about any game. Even the Zelda: Breath Of The Wild expansion wasnt very good! It all seems like such a waste too. Surely all that time and money couldve been put towards a sequel or spin-off instead?

Id much rather that come out soon than wasting those six months, or whatever it is, on an expansion nobody wants and you never play more than once, if at all.

Infinite games

Just saw that PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds has lost a third of its audience in the last six months, which I cant imagine theyre happy about. Its still huge but that is a huge fall, especially for a game that never really fixed itself to the degree youd think when youre pulling in $1 billion in cash.

Makes me wonder how long Fortnite will stay on top, which is hard to guess considering that a) its free and b) it actually does a good job of updating itself and keeping itself fresh. Plus, it actually works and has never had any major performance issues that Im aware of.

I just cant imagine what would ever replace it other than some other kind of online shooter that was also free. Itd have to be that or some kind of outsider, unpredictable game like Minecraft. Speaking of which thats another game thats never really lost its mojo and still has tons of updates. Maybe some games can last forever, as long as you put the work in.

Immoral conduct

Not surprised to learn that loot boxes are having a negative effect on kids at all. Im not sure what else anyone expected really. The government does seems to have been paying some attention, but it seems to be taking them a very long time to actually do anything about it. Kudos to Belgium for taking EA to task though.

Loot boxes are vile on every level: they ruin gameplay, they encourage gambling, and they prey on the young and the vulnerable. I hope they become illegal and that just for once the games industry showed some kind of moral backbone.

Breaking the rush

Crazy to see Fallout 76 discounted after just a week, and by £20 too. The whole thing has clearly been a disaster and I also worry about what this is going to do for Bethesda. It is very hard to put blame on anyone but them though, because I dont think anyone wouldve cared if they just delayed the thing until it was at least halfway ready.

It wouldve sold better based on not just been more stable but not being out the same week as half a dozen other games. If any good comes of all this it will be that the Christmas rush will finally be something that publishers try to avoid, rather than rush straight into like theyre putting their head in a blender.

I do feel sorry for Hitman 2 though. Its not a series Ive ever liked but it seems like its exactly what fans wanted and yet Warner Bros. seem to have just thrown it out without any thought as to how it might do. I get the feeling they just wanted a bit Christmas release and didnt care about anything else beyond that. Hopefully theyll think better next time too.

So GC, is Fallout 76 worth a buy? Im not sure after your review?
Manic Miner 100 (gamertag)
PS: One of you best and worst reviews, if you follow my meaning. I loved reading it. I bet it was hard being so negative.

GC: Not as hard as it was sitting through the game.

Will you be reviewing Beat Saber for PlayStation VR?

GC: Yes!

This weeks Hot Topic

The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader Anton, who asks how many online games are you currently playing?

Games as a service is one of the big buzzwords of the moment in gaming and means any game which is constantly updated with the intention of keeping you playing for months and years to come. Theyre almost exclusively multiplayer (and include MMOs), but the problem with their rising popularity is theres not enough time to play them all – so which ones are you favourite?

How regularly do you play the games and when did you start? How long do you expect to continue playing and how much time do you have for other games, whether multiplayer or not? What do you think of games as a service and how many can you generally have on the go at once?
